The Assault on Freedom of the Press in a Time of War

Wikileaks and War: Why didn’t we listen when Julian Assange exposed US war crimes?

What is a war of aggression? What is a war crime? What are crimes against humanity? How is the public to know when they occur and by whom they are perpetrated? What and who censors the press and for what reasons? With the war in Ukraine raging and the ashes in Iraq still smoldering, these questions need to be clearly defined before they can be answered completely and truthfully.

Find out the answers: Wednesday April 27, 4:00 pm PDT. Click to register.
Please join legal scholar Marjorie Cohn and Jim Lafferty from the National Lawyers Guild as they moderate a roundtable discussion on these issues and more on April 27th at 4:00pm PST.

LA Progressive, CodePink, The National Lawyers Guild, ACLU Pasadena/Foothill Chapter, American Constitution Society-San Diego Chapter, and Assange Defense-Los Angeles are hosting a webinar on the threat to freedom of the press in a time of war.

Our roundtable will include Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges, CodePink cofounder Medea Benjamin, author and historian Vijay Prashad, and international human rights lawyer Renata Avila.

The panelists will discuss a citizen’s right and need to know what our governments say and do in our names, the necessity of a free and unhindered press to provide that knowledge to the public, and the existential threat to journalism we now face due to the actions by governments around the globe, including our own.

Save the Date - 4/14 Licensing Webinar Part 2

Greetings,

Since September 2021, the Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) has been working with the City Council to amend Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 104.00 et seq. (Cannabis Procedures Ordinance). The recently adopted ordinance and Rules and Regulations provide application process timelines, revise definitions, create a refiling process for Applicants, and clarify the process for Phase 3 Retail Round 2.

In accordance with Council instruction, the Office of the City Attorney transmitted the draft ordinance on March 15, 2022 which reflects these amendments. In addition, DCR has also updated the Rules and Regulations to support and provide further clarity to the licensing processes and operational requirements. The ordinance and updated Rules and Regulations were approved by the City Council on April 5, 2022.

To help ensure understanding of these changes DCR is hosting a second live webinar on Thursday April 14th from 2-3:30 p.m. that will cover these amendments and how they will impact current and future Applicants and Licensees.

You can join the Zoom webinar here and may submit pre-webinar questions here; the Department may address questions submitted during its presentation. The password for the Zoom webinar is 231553. Please note DCR will not discuss any questions regarding specific applications.
