Miracles For Kids for ‘Spring Basket of Miracles

Quarterly Miracles For Kids for ‘Spring Basket of Miracles on Saturday, April 2nd?

DELIVER BASKETS. Bring joy to Miracles families by helping to deliver baskets, just like celebrity skateboarder Nyjah Huston did last year, presenting brand new Nike shoes and skateboards to 20 lucky households!

Learn more about the April 2nd “Spring Basket of Miracles” event on the Miracles for Kids website, along with even more creative ideas to “be the miracle.” Follow on Instagram @MiraclesForKids to see how your efforts make a difference or simply spread the message. Discover ways to get involved year-round - such as internships, community programs, giving circles, or events - at MiraclesForKids.org.
  • When: April 2nd 9am-11am
  • Why: Miracles for Kids shares to deliver spring baskets filled with items most needed by our families right now – food, non-toxic cleaning supplies, paper products, home goods, and toiletries. The packages will help stretch the already scarce budgets of families facing the combined impact of their child’s life-threatening illness, a devastated economy, and the effects of COVID-19 on their already compromised immune systems.

Let’s talk about Biden’s New Billionaire Tax Proposal

Donate

Dear Reader,

Tax season is upon us. For the past year, ProPublica’s series “The Secret IRS Files” has illuminated how the federal tax system helps increase wealth inequality. Each story in the series highlights a different strategy that the ultrawealthy use to shield their wealth from taxes, from writing off losses incurred by thoroughbreds or sports teams to, in Peter Thiel’s case, building a Roth IRA into a $5 billion tax shelter.

The Billionaire Playbook
Tuesday, April 12
4-5 p.m. Eastern time
Register Here

A new tax proposal released this week by President Joe Biden takes direct aim at billionaires. At this event, we will unpack Biden’s billionaire tax proposal, discuss how the federal tax system is broken (and who broke it), and explain why the federal tax code is key to reducing wealth inequality. Hope you can join us,

LANI Forum 2022

Dear Friend of LANI,

We are so excited to share our plans for the 2022 LANI Virtual Forum! This year, we will be hosting a six-webinar series online and free of charge, and we hope that neighborhood leaders and stakeholders, as well as our CBO and public agency partners, will join us!

Here's what we have planned so far:
  • April 21 - Prioritizing Pedestrians: Making a Walkable Neighborhood
  • May 19 - ADU 101: The What, How, and What's Next of Accessory Dwelling Units
  • June 16 - Creating Green & Open Space out of Underutilized Lots
  • Sept 22 - The Digital Divide: Progress and Needs
  • Oct 20 - Transit-Oriented Communities: The Intersection of Affordable Housing and Public Transportation
  • Nov 17 - Public Art: Make Your Neighborhood Beautiful (and More!)

Our first session on improving pedestrian safety and infrastructure will include a combination of experts in the field and community members who have successfully brought pedestrian-oriented improvements to their neighborhoods; registration opens Monday, 3/28 on our website!

We are having a good time planning these webinars, and we can't wait for you to join the conversation!

The LANI Team

Although we had hoped to provide an in-person Forum this year, the safety of our attendees and staff, and the uncertainty of planning a large-scale event while COVID19 is still with us, have convinced us to hold a Virtual Forum again. We hope to return to an in-person event in Spring 2023. Thank you for your understanding and support!

LANI Project Update:
Photovoice for Pedestrian Planning

In our partnership with L.A. Dept. of Public Health for Step by Step Pedestrian Planning, LANI has been working with community members on a photovoice project. Photovoice is a process in which people use video and/or photo images to capture aspects of their environment and experiences; the pictures can then be used to illustrate the realities of the photographers’ lives to the public and policy makers and to spur change. In the Florence-Firestone neighborhood, residents have documented concerns like sidewalks that lack ramps into crosswalks, impeding access for people using wheelchairs, strollers or shopping carts. We look forward to seeing more pics on stakeholders' social media accounts: our hashtags are #FlorenceFirestoneWalks and #CaminaFlorenceFirestone.

LANI Project Update II:
Potential Active Transportation Projects

If you live or work in Boyle Heights or in the Skid Row/Fashion District/Pinata District neighborhood of Downtown, we want to hear from you! Please take our brief survey:

Cannabis Procedures Ordinance and Rules & Regs Changes

Greetings,

Since September 2021, the Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) has been working with the City Council to amend Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 104.00 et seq. (Cannabis Procedures Ordinance). The most recent proposal provides application process timelines, revises definitions, creates a refiling process for Applicants, and clarifies the process for Phase 3 Retail Round 2.

In accordance with Council instruction, the Office of the City Attorney transmitted the draft ordinance on March 15, 2022 which reflects these amendments. In addition, DCR has also updated the Rules and Regulations to support and provide further clarity to the licensing processes and operational requirements. The updated Rules and Regulations will be posted in the Council File found  here. The draft ordinance will be scheduled for City Council review and adoption soon.

To help ensure understanding of these changes DCR is hosting a live webinar on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 1:00- 2:30 pm that will cover these amendments and how they will impact current and future Applicants and Licensees.

You can join the Zoom webinar here and may submit pre-webinar questions here; the Department may address questions submitted during its presentation. The password for the Zoom webinar is 231553. Please note DCR will not discuss any questions regarding specific applications.
