View this email in your browser

Dear ,

As we kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I hope you will be able to join me this Saturday, May 7 at 4pm to celebrate the unveiling of the Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway at Beverly Boulevard and Belmont Avenue in Historic Filipinotown!

Officially called ”Talang Gabay - Our Guiding Star,” Los Angeles’ latest cultural marker was designed by renowned Filipino artist Eliseo Art Silva and pays tribute to the incredible contributions of the Filipino community in our city and beyond.
The event will include a ribbon-cutting, lighting ceremony, music, dance performances, appearances from celebrities and - most importantly - leaders from the incredible community of Historic Filipinotown.

I'm proud to have helped lead the way in making this happen, and I’d be honored to celebrate this moment with all of you!

Residents interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP at bit.ly/HiFiGatewayOur team will follow up with additional details later this week.

I’ll see you next Saturday, May 7, at 4pm at Beverly Boulevard and Belmont Avenue!

Mabuhay!

Sat. May 14. Teleconference CANCELLED. The Worst Bill of 2022!

We are sorry, but Senator Stern cancelled this Sunday's teleconference. Our next regular teleconference will be Saturday May 14 at 10 AM.

AB 2011 could be the worst bill of 2022 for taking away local control!

  • AB 2011 was a gut and amend that created a massive new bill on April 18th
  • It requires ministerial approval of construction across a broad category of zones – including office, retail, and parking.
  • AB 2011 is a massive state taking of flexibility needed by local jurisdictions to place housing where it best meets the needs of the community.
  • CEQA is circumvented on these projects. CEQA is an important source of information to the community and developers and helps protect the environment.
  • Parking is not allowed for these projects. Parking is a necessary feature for many developments. Any developments containing commercial space are particularly sensitive to parking needs.
  • The bill’s labor requirements make the cost of housing higher than necessary when what we need is more affordability.
  • The bill’s contains monthly labor reporting requirements that are a burden on both construction contractors and the local governments expected to enforce the bill’s labor requirements.
  • The department is allowed to adopt guidelines or terms that are not subject to the Administrative Procedures Act Government, taking away an important review process.
  • AB 2011 details pages of standards imposed by the state that are best left to local communities.

Please contribute to help us continue to lobby for good bills and fight bad ones for you, while keeping you informed and involved. Become a sustaining member with a modest monthly donation. If you can't become a monthly contributor, please send a spot contribution to help the cause here.

Can We All Live in the Best Version of Los Angeles?

Wednesday, May 4, 2022, 12:00 PM PDT
A Zócalo/Goldhirsh Foundation LA2050 Event

Food, art, culture, weather, beaches, mountains—and people, from all over the world and with a broad range of talents and dreams—make Los Angeles an amazing place to live. A homelessness and housing crisis, drought, traffic, inequality, and political dysfunction can make Los Angeles an impossible place to live. What would the best possible Los Angeles look like, and how can the entire city come together to create a shared vision?

Cultural workers and community first responders visit Zócalo to discuss the efforts that inspire them—from mutual aid to policy change—and what they think it will take for Los Angeles to live up to its full potential, for all Angelenos.

Is This What Direct Democracy Looks Like?

“This Is What Democracy Looks Like,” a catch phrase introduced by Seattle activists in the ’90s, is a common refrain heard at government protests today. But have you ever asked yourself what does direct democracy—which describes initiatives, referenda, and recalls—look like? And can it really live up to its promise to be the “people’s process”? Register below to find out how we can put more democracy into direct democracy.

Plus: Catch an L.A. Opera string quartet performance live at the ASU California Center and read the Takeaway from this week’s event at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum that makes the case for why "good conflict journalism would look like streaming TV."

Moderated by Nathan Gardels, Editor-in-Chief, Noēma Magazine and Co-founder, Berggruen Institute

Direct democracy is supposed to be a people’s process, allowing everyday citizens to enact their own ideas for laws or constitutional amendments. But does California’s system live up to that promise?

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, Public Policy Institute of California president Mark Baldassare, and Initiative & Referendum Institute president John Matsusaka, author of Let the People Rule, visit Zócalo to explore what it would take to bring more democracy into California’s direct democracy.

Zócalo invites our in-person audience to continue the conversation with our speakers and each other at a post-event reception with complimentary drinks.
