Caravan in East LA Celebrating 50th Ann. of The Chicano Moratorium

Community To Hold Caravan Through East Los Angeles Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Chicano Moratorium

VISUALS:  Car caravan down Whittier Boulevard on Saturday, August 29, 2020, that will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium.

WHEN:  Saturday, August 29, 2020, at 10:00 am.

WHERE: Caravan will assemble at 10:00 am in Pico Rivera at the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and Gregg Road. The caravan will continue down Whittier Boulevard to Ruben Salazar Park - 3864 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90023.

WHO:

Invited speakers:

Ron Herrera - President of Los Angeles County Federation of Labor,

Lupe Carrasco - Cardona UTLA Member/Co-Chair of 50th Chicano Moratorium

Jorge H. Rodriguez - Co-Chair 50th Chicano Moratorium

Gloria Arellanes - Original 1970 Chicano Moratorium Committee Member

Rosalio Munoz - Chair of 1970 Chicano Moratorium

WHAT: Fifty years ago, at the height of the Chicano Movement and the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, over 30,000 Chicano activists gathered in East Los Angeles organizing the Chicano Moratorium, a march to protest the war and demand dignity and respect for their communities. Chicanos were overrepresented in those who were killed in combat overseas while their communities at home were consistently neglected and denied basic resources such as quality school, housing, and access to good jobs. The resulting backlash against the march by local law enforcement resulted in the injury of many peaceful participants and the death of Latino reporter Ruben Salazar after a tear gas canister struck him in the head.

Decades later, the struggle for social and economic justice in Chicano communities across the U.S. continues. Income inequality is at an all-time high. The Coronavirus pandemic has further exposed the gaps in U.S. safety net programs as Latinos are overrepresented in the amount of COVID-19 related deaths. The death of young people of color at the hands of law enforcement continues to be a tragedy that has rocked our nation to our core bringing thousands out to the street demanding an end to the systemic oppression of communities of color.

On the fiftieth anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium, thousands of community members will take to the streets of East Los Angeles once more to commemorate this historic event and to highlight the need to continue the fight to end hatred and inequality in our communities.

Defend the Post Office This Saturday

This weekend, people around the country are mobilizing to defend the U.S. Postal Service in response to attacks by Donald Trump.

On Saturday at 11 a.m. local time, we’ll join grassroots activists at local post offices demanding that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy resign in the wake of mail slowdowns. We’ll also call on Congress to safeguard the integrity of our mail and elections, and protect it from Donald Trump’s and Republicans’ plan to destroy the USPS.

Thousands of people have already RSVPed to actions. Click here to join them, and find an action in your community!

If there aren’t any actions in your area, host one of your own: Click here to get started on hosting one! Once you register an event, you'll get a host guide with detailed instructions on how to structure your event and resources to help along the way.

The actions will show Americans coming together to stand up for a postal system that connects us, that we rely on for medications, paychecks, and more, and that will literally be counted on to deliver democracy in the elections this fall.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all event participants will be expected to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and follow all local safety guidelines.

President Trump’s and his crony Postmaster General DeJoy’s attacks on the U.S. Postal Service threatens an essential government service relied on by millions of Americans and small businesses for the delivery of lifesaving medicines, supplies, packages, and more. We have to fight back.
