WEST HOLLYWOOD, February 4, 2020 – In commemoration of the 22nd Anniversary of V‐Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, the City of West Hollywood and Hollywood NOW will host a two-day production of The Vagina Monologues.

The Vagina Monologues will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2020 and Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. It will be performed by local grassroots activists and leaders, and will feature original material that spotlights the significant diversity of women’s voices and their stories.

Twenty-two years ago, Eve Ensler's play The Vagina Monologues gave birth to V-Day bringing widespread attention to issues of harassment, rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation, and sex slavery. Every year around the world, The Vagina Monologues is performed by local activists to raise awareness and funds for organizations supporting women. To date, these events have raised more than $100 million for grassroots anti-violence groups and safe houses worldwide.

The cast for this production includes The Honorable Abbe Land, Toni Sawyer, Connor Kelly-Eiding, Deshon Gray, The Honorable Lindsey Horvath, Myra ‘Mikie’ Friedman, Chela Demuir Cartier, Minzi, Zekiah Wright, Kristina Mitchell, Marie Cartier, Gia Ryan, Jackie Steele, Alexis Sanchez, and Melaney Noll Lubey.  The production is directed by Shaina Rosenthal and produced by Karen Eyres and John Erickson.

As part of the City of West Hollywood’s annual commemoration of V-Day, attendees will be encouraged to add their voices to the global effort to end violence against women via the hashtag #vday. Violence prevention and awareness information will also be available including the City’s Only Yes Means Yes public awareness campaign about sexual assault, which promotes the important message of consent.

This event is endorsed by the City of West Hollywood’s Women’s Advisory Board, Transgender Advisory Board; Pacific Shore NOW; V-Day; and One Billion Rising - Los Angeles.

Tickets are $15 and proceeds benefit Hollywood NOW and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. Validated parking will be provided in the adjacent five-story West Hollywood Park structure.

Press Conference: Seniors Were Mislead re. Affordable Housing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hundreds of Seniors in Hollywood Mislead About Living in Affordable Housing

WHAT:

PRESS CONFERENCE:

Hundreds of Seniors were falsely mislead by Meta Housing Corporation that they were living in Affordable Housing. Many face large rent increases that they cannot afford.

WHEN:

THIS SATURDAY, February 1, 2020

Members of the press should arrive at 1:00 PM

WHERE:

At the corner of Garfield Place and Hollywood Boulevard, 90028

The Hollywood Local of the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU)—the tenant-led housing movement—has been assisting a large group of senior citizens to organize a tenant’s association in their building, The Metro in East Hollywood at 1717 Garfield Pl. This group of seniors were purposely misled by the building's owner, Meta Housing Corporation, who claimed that they were protected under affordable housing when in fact Meta Housing has not filed any low-income housing paperwork with the city.

The Metro building at 1717 Garfield Pl. is home to seniors on fixed incomes who cannot afford the large rent increase Meta Housing is imposing on them. Despite written requests by the tenants to meet with Meta Housing to negotiate a reasonable rent increase, the owner has refused to respond. Meta Housing rents to a majority of non-monolingual English speakers—including Armenian, Russian, Thai, Korean, and Spanish—yet the owner has refused to communicate in any language other than English.

This is not the first time this slumlord has preyed on seniors. In 2018, Meta Housing hiked the rent on seniors living in the Metro building in Chinatown by 8%, which many of the longtime residents could not afford.

On Saturday Feb. 1st the tenants of the building will hold a press conference demanding that Meta Housing meet with them and negotiate a fair rent increase. This diverse group of tenants will share their stories and members of the L.A. Tenants will be present in support of their cause.

Housing is a human right and we will not let the seniors in our community be taken advantage of by unscrupulous landlords and the city government that protects them.

LA County District Attorney Candidate Forum

Come meet the candidates seeking your vote for L.A. County District Attorney in the March 3rd Primary Election.

About this Event

"The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is the nation’s largest local prosecutorial agency by far. Its caseload, together with L.A.’s position as a capital of innovation and a breeding ground for political movements, put the L.A. D.A.’s office in a position to influence justice policy not just here but throughout California and, arguably, around the nation.

Practices established in L.A. may well set the course for dealing with homelessness, mental health care, policing and public safety everywhere.

That makes a strong case to be made that aside from the presidential race, the most important item before voters in 2020 will be the race for L.A. County D.A."—Los Angeles Times

Hollywood Hills West NC Planning & Land Use Management Committee Meeting

HOLLYWOOD HILLS WEST NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL PLUM COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, February 3, 2020

6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Will and Ariel Durant Library Branch

7140 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90046

AGENDA

1. Welcome, general comments and committee member introductions.
2. Consider approving draft minutes of a prior meeting held on January 8, 2020.

3. PLUM Committee Chair’s update report - including w/re: a proposed new hotel at 1700 N. La Brea Avenue, which will be presented at the PLUM Committee’s meeting scheduled for March 2, 2020.

4. 3003 N. Runyon Canyon Road - is a site in HHWNC’s Area 6 and City Council District 4.

Manuel Valencia, who owns the 4.5 acre site still has his 2016 application pending with the City’s Planning Department. Mr. Valencia’s proposed project would treat the existing Headly/Handley House as an accessory dwelling unit, and he has asked the City to approve his proposal to build a new second structure on the site, which is in the midst and at the top of Runyon Canyon Park.

The Heather/Handley House was designed by Lloyd Wright, and the City designated it as LA Historic Cultural Monument #563 in 1992. The Planning Department’s environmental case no. is ENV-2016-4180-EIR. The State Clearinghouse no. is 2018041016.

At HHWNC’s Board meeting on September 18, 2019, HHWNC’s Board passed two motions to oppose Mr. Valencia’s proposed project. One motion passed by an 18 to 0 vote. The second motion passed on a 16 to 3 vote.

Nicole Kuklok-Waldman of ColLAborate requested an opportunity at the Committee’s November meeting to provide more information about the proposed project. Several questions from the Committee and other stakeholders still remain unanswered from that meeting.

Mr. Valencia subsequently retained Stacey Brenner of the Brenner Consulting Group to work with Chris Parker of Pacific Crest Consultants to provide additional outreach.

Ms. Brenner will be leading the presentation.

5. 6541 W. Hollywood Boulevard - is the address for Restaurant 504, which is in HHWNC’s Area 3 and City Council District 13.

The site is owned by Adolfo Suaya’s What’s On Third, Inc. Three tied lots are there, and total in excess of 28,000 square feet. The site includes several buildings, including Jane’s House, which is LA Historical Cultural Monument #227. There are multiple tenants in several of the buildings. The site has frontage on both Hollywood Boulevard and Hudson Avenue.

In September, 2019, the City’s Planning Department sent HHWNC a copy of an application Mark England filed on behalf of Idaho Peppercorn LLC for a conditional use permit on behalf of Restaurant 504. The restaurant operated on the site as a tenant of What’s On Third, Inc.

The application asked for a permit to allow the restaurant to sell a full line of alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption. The application requested permission to operate the restaurant 24 hours daily, and to sell alcoholic beverages from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily even though the City’s commercial corner rules otherwise would limit the hours of operation (and all sales) from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mr. England also requested permission to have live entertainment at the restaurant, but would limit the number of musicians to 4 or fewer. The Planning Department’s case no. is ZA-2019-5469-CUB. The CA CEQA no. is ENV-2019-5470-CE.

Around that time or soon thereafter, it seems that the restaurant’s ownership changed.

It seems that Te’Kila restaurant, another tenant at the same address, is the new owner and operator of the restaurant.

The City’s Planning Department will hold a public hearing at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, in Los Angeles City Hall’s Room 1020 to consider the application. We understand and expect that the case file will be held open for a sufficient time for HHWNC’s Board to make recommendations via a Board vote and community impact statement filing.

Lee Rabun, the applicant’s and Te’Kila’s representative, will be making the presentation.

6. Public comments on non-agendized items.

7. Adjournment.

PLUM Committee meeting dates scheduled for the rest of the first half of 2020 are set (tentatively) for March 2, April 6, May 4, and June 8, 2020. All of those meeting dates are Mondays.

West Coast’s longest-running Muslim convention begins Friday

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA will be hosting its 34th West Coast Jalsa Salana (Annual Convention) this weekend aimed at bringing together Americans through dialogue and prayers. In what is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in San Bernardino County, the weekend-long event will feature a special session for guests on Saturday afternoon entitled, “Compassion in a Time of Conflict,” that will bring together congressional representatives, police chiefs, councilmembers, mayors, law enforcement, community leaders, and faith leaders across Southern California, as well as Muslims from around the country.

“Our Jalsa Salana is an annual tradition in Southern California during the holiday season to celebrate our common purpose of promoting peace on earth," said National Spokesperson for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, Amjad Mahmood Khan. “By facilitating robust and meaningful conversations each year, the West Coast Jalsa Salana unites individuals from a diverse range of religious, ethnic and political backgrounds across Southern California for a singular purpose: to let the forces of love overwhelm the forces of hate.”

About the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community:

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, reformist and fast-growing international movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Community spans 213 countries with tens of millions of members. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is among the first American-Muslim organizations.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long- awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.

A Zócalo/UCLA Downtown Event
Moderated by Joe Mathews, Editor and Columnist, Zócalo Public Square

Even in a city where people dare to be different, Zev Yaroslavsky stands out. Zev, now director of the Los Angeles Initiative at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs and the Department of History, has packed several lives into one lifetime, reshaping himself along with his fast-changing city. The child of immigrants from what is now Ukraine, Zev first drew notice as a UCLA student activist on behalf of Soviet Jews, before earning election to the L.A. City Council. Later, as a longtime member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, he was a leader in making far-reaching changes, involving everything from mass transit to healthcare to the Hollywood Bowl, in a county that he once compared to a “Soviet-style system … with too many people only sort of in charge and no person sufficiently at the helm to take responsibility.” What lessons has Zev learned about how to get things done in Los Angeles? How can art, culture, and politics shape each other here? And what sort of city is Los Angeles now in the process of becoming? The incomparable Zev Yaroslavsky visits Zócalo to reflect on the past, present, and future of his hometown.
