Now more than ever, working-class voters are desperate for an alternative to the party that consistently fails on its promises to workers, and proves itself powerless against escalating far-right attacks. The current genocide against Palestinians started on the Democrats’ watch and will continue if they get elected. Join the discussion on how a labor party--led by the working class with a program that champions the needs of women, people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, the disabled, youth, seniors, and all who are oppressed and disenfranchised--is the tool we need to organize real solutions and build a brighter future.

August 8, 2024

TIME:
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Speaker:
LAPD Captain Brian Wendling
Rank: Captain III
Division: West Valley Division

Dear Neighbors,

For the past several days, LAPD Captain Brian Wendling and I have had detailed conversations about the recent home invasions and robberies in Encino. We have studied the targeted areas and identified the points of entry and exit used by these criminals.

In response, the Homeowners of Encino will hold an in-person meeting at our Local Police Department Conference Room due to the importance of the subject: the SAFETY of our FAMILIES. This critical topic surpasses the limitations of a Zoom call, where issues such as muted participants and restricted speaking time hinder effective communication.

Goals and Objectives of the Meeting:

  • Bring our community together to receive and share information
  • Discuss proven and successful actions implemented by other communities and the LAPD
  • Develop strategies to prevent Encino from being a "TARGETED COMMUNITY"

Your attendance and participation are crucial. Let's work together to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhood.

Sincerely,

Homeowners of Encino

The tour also includes a visit to the Watts Towers Arts Center, where visitors can see rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and learn about the ongoing preservation efforts for the Towers. 3rd Annual Nikkei Celebration in Boyle Heights

Celebrate Boyle Heights' Rich Nikkei Legacy!

The countdown has begun as we are all preparing for the 3rd Annual Nikkei Celebration in Boyle Heights!

Our parade begins Sat. Aug. 3rd at 5pm on Saratoga in front of Tenrikyo Church, 2727 East First Street, and ends in front of Otomisan, 2506 East First Street, 90033

Our 3rd Annual Nikkei Celebration in Boyle Heights is a vibrant event commemorating the impactful Japanese community.

Come and join us as we delve into the rich history of Japanese culture in Boyle Heights. The Nikkei Celebration will showcase the enduring legacy of Otomisan’s Landmark, the only continuously operating authentic Japanese restaurant in the same location since 1956, serving Boyle Heights. This is not just an event; it's a journey through time and culture.

Your participation is not just a visit; it's a statement of support for our event and an investment in preserving Boyle Heights' vibrant Nikkei heritage for future generations.

The honorable Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles, SONE Kenko, will deliver an inspiring message to open our program. This will be followed by performances from Hikari Taiko, the 2023 Nisei Weeks Queen Court, and Boyle Heights Neighborhood Music School. Additionally, there will be presentations from various groups and businesses showcasing their products and services.

To conclude our event, we will have the Ondo Dancing to celebrate another year of uniting our community and sharing the history of our Japanese families, friends, and neighbors.

Parking: Finding parking can be challenging in Boyle Heights. You may find street parking on 1st Street, west of Soto Street, and in the surrounding area.

Beat the Heat: It's going to be a very warm day, so we recommend wearing light clothing, applying sunscreen, and wearing comfortable shoes.

Food and Drinks: Otomisan will be open with a selected menu for food and drinks. Additionally, there will be a fresh fruit truck vendor and a corner store available.

Seating: There will be seating in front of the stage, and selected seating on the first rows for elders and people with disabilities under the canopies.

Vendors: Get ready to explore a variety of fantastic items available for purchase and support our nonprofits by making generous contributions. Your financial support is greatly appreciated and will make a significant impact.

Important Message: We are excited to create a memorable time and look forward to seeing you there.

Ticketed Event…Available Now!

Friends of the LA River (FoLAR) invites everyone to its 3rd annual River Fest, a FREE, all-ages, open-air environmental arts and community festival at the scenic LA State Historic Park on Sunday, August 11, 2024 from 3:00pm to 9:00pm.

The event will showcase the nexus of nature, climate change, culture, history, people, and the LA River. With heavy emphasis on the arts, River Fest will offer a variety of local artists with live music and dance performances, a visual art gallery, and eco-activities for the whole family. The event will also feature top L.A. food trucks, and a marketplace with 50 booths from local environmental, arts, Indigenous, and partner organizations like Water Replenishment District, REI Co-op, 100 Acre Partnership, and more. While free, registration is required, and tickets will go fast. Registration is now open on FoLAR’s website.

Debuting this year is the Lewis Lounge, a tribute to FoLAR founder and poet, Lewis MacAdams, inspired by the flow of both life and the River. Today opens the multigenerational call for poetry, asking “How do you connect to the River?” All submissions will be displayed, some called to read live during a curated poetry jam, hosted by Los Angeles’ famed Mike the Poet Sonksen.

"The L.A. River connects so many diverse communities across its 51 miles and River Fest 2024 is about bringing those communities together to celebrate the ways in which the River continues to inspire us. With an incredible lineup of artists, advocates and community members, we hope River Fest will give all Angelenos the chance to experience the L.A. River's unique ability to enhance our collective wellbeing... and to have some fun together along the way,” states Candice Dickens-Russell, FoLAR CEO.

The activities at River Fest will share stories of environmental justice, community leadership, challenges faced by the River, and Indigenous perspectives on nature and the River. Highlights include Aztec dance company Xipe Totec, pop soul band Undecided Future, an indie rock/pop band Child Seat (pictured at right) and Los Silverbacks a World Music group that combines Latin and African Rhythms. In addition to the noted festivities, FoLAR’s River Rover, a 38 ft. mobile visitor and education center will be on hand along with FoLAR’s education team.

All free general admission tickets for River Fest 2024 cover entrance into the festival, access to this Exhibitor and Artist Village and performances, as well as a complimentary raffle ticket. Food, drinks, art and other items or services offered by River Fest vendors may be purchased at the event. A limited number of VIP tickets are available, providing an all new VIP area with shade, seating, optimal stage viewing, VIP parking, VIP check-in, a VIP gift bag, two drink tickets and five complimentary raffle tickets. All River Fest proceeds will contribute to FoLAR’s year-round K-12 environmental education programs, stewardship events, and local advocacy work.

River Fest was created to reflect FoLAR’s values, offering a more equitable and accessible community celebration of both FoLAR and the River that runs through so many of the region’s communities. This ultimately supports FoLAR’s mission to build capacity for communities, students, and future leaders to advocate for nature, climate, and equity on the LA River.

FoLAR will be celebrating its 34th annual Great LA River CleanUp this Fall, featuring multiple locations throughout the entire river, with opportunities for everyone to help support the River and make meaningful connections to it.

The 2024 River Fest is made possible through major supporters M2O, Niagara Cares, Bank of America, City of Long Beach, REI Co-op, Elysian Valley Arts Collective, Lil Dicky, Stantec, Water Replenishment District, City National Bank, and Athens Services.

experience 6.6-miles of open streets
—a pop-up park—for a day using their favorite people-powered ways to move around

Sunday, August 18, 2024; 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

WHAT:  CicLAvia
—Meet the Hollywoods
CicLAvia returns to Hollywood this summer with a great way to be a tourist in your own backyard while experiencing car-free open streets at CicLAvia’s 54th event on Sunday, August 18; between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy 6.6-miles of car-free open streets connecting East Hollywood, Hollywood and West Hollywood via Hollywood Blvd (between Orange Dr and Hillhurst/Virgil Aves), Highland Ave (between Hollywood Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd), and Santa Monica Blvd (between Highland Ave and San Vicente Blvd).

All people-powered modes of movement are invited to this unique, temporary park for the day that will feature activities, street games, local businesses, and art and cultural activations for all ages. Always free, CicLAvia participants can show up anywhere along the route at any time to enjoy the open streets. This is an exciting opportunity to explore WeHo, Hollywood, and East Hollywood from a new perspective.

CicLAvia—Meet the Hollywoods features five (5) Hubs along the route filled with plenty of activities and programs. Hubs are walking zones (mandatory bike dismounts) and meeting points with family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refilling stations, free basic bike repair, bike parking, and first aid. “Our Meet the Hollywoods program is exemplary of what CicLAvia Sundays are all about,” says CicLAvia Executive Director Romel Pascual. “Locals and tourists have the opportunity to experience iconic areas that may be familiar to them, but with an unexpected twist: in the absence of cars and polluting traffic, they have the freedom and safety to walk, bike, skate and stroll at their preferred pace.”

Inspired by Bogotá’s weekly ciclovía, which celebrates its 50th year anniversary in 2024, CicLAvia has been temporarily closing streets to car traffic and opening them as public parks in Los Angeles since 2010. CicLAvia car-free streets connect all of us to the neighborhoods where we live, work, shop, learn, and play. Active participants at CicLAvia use people-powered mobility to navigate public streets in a safe and joyful way. Along the way there is shopping at local businesses and access to cultural and architectural gems. Participants use open streets as spaces to connect with each other, while making a positive impact on the environment and creating a more sustainable and climate resilient city and region. Over the past 13-plus years CicLAvia has helped communities re-imagine a greener and cleaner Los Angeles, promoting equitable transportation options, healthier lifestyles, and closer connections to community.

Only people-powered vehicles are allowed. No electric scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards, electric unicycles, motorcycles and other non-people-powered vehicles are allowed at CicLAvia. Community Garden Volunteer Days Start June 29th

USGBC California Selects RootDown LA’s KitchenPOD as its 2024 Environmental Justice Project

Community Garden Volunteer Days Start June 29th

Los Angeles (June 20, 2024)  Access to fresh, nutritious food helps prevent chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and mental health. In Los Angeles County, almost one-fifth of households and nearly one-third of low-income families are impacted by the lack of access to fresh, nutritious foods, according to a 2021 study by USC. Since 2007, RootDown LA (RDLA) has been a strong presence in addressing food insecurity and lack of access in South Los Angeles. Their efforts led to the U.S. Green Building Council California (USGBC-CA) selecting RDLA’s KitchenPOD as the 2024 Environmental Justice Project. The official groundbreaking with a public volunteer day for the project is June 29th in South Los Angeles.

The RDLA KitchenPOD, is a versatile, mobile, and sustainable structure designed to ensure access to fresh, nutritious foods. Its innovative design, which includes a solar-powered refrigeration system, passive ventilation, and thermal cooling, is scalable and environmentally friendly. The straw walls outside the container are not just walls; they are a vibrant and integral part of the community garden, a testament to this collaborative vision for a healthier, more sustainable community.

“Since its founding in 2007, RootDown LA has played a critical role in bridging the divide in food equity and green space seen across Los Angeles neighborhoods,” states Katie Freeze-Becker of Leading Edge, and Environmental Justice Project Committee Chair. “The organization’s philosophy of centering workforce development in its programming serves the aim of getting kids and their families “excited to eat their veggies” while building the next generation of community leaders. USGBC-CA is grateful for the opportunity to support a project with such a clearly articulated vision for a healthier, more empowered Los Angeles.”

“The KitchenPOD is more than just a structure; it's a dynamic platform for change. It extends and supports our impactful programming to promote health and wellness, offering zero-waste culinary and horticultural programming for a Youth-driven Neighborhood Food System,” states Karen Ramirez, Executive Director, RootDown LA. “RootDown LA's fundamental philosophy of the ‘Healthy Youth and Food Pipeline’ sparks interest and equips youth with skills to join the food, nutrition, health, and entrepreneurial sectors. Support and participation in this project is appreciated and vital to providing access to fresh, nutritious foods in the South LA community and beyond.”  (Photo Credit: RootDown LA)

According to the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, food insecurity and lack of access to fresh, nutritious foods are known contributors to chronic health conditions, which disproportionately affect racially diverse and minoritized populations residing in underserved geographic areas. The KitchenPOD project will help complete RDLA’s model for building their Youth-driven Neighborhood Food Systems (YDNFS) - urban food clusters that support a healthier regional food economy by increasing capacity for urban food production and distribution. The KitchenPOD will begin to bridge the gap in health disparities, access to fresh, nutritious foods, workforce development opportunities, and equity in South LA.

The June 29th groundbreaking workday event, hosted by USGBC-CA in partnership with Blue Sky LA, will offer the community the opportunity to be highly hands-on in preparing new raised beds for the expanding vegetable garden, while starting on construction of the KitchenPod. For more information and to RSVP participation (there are 50 spots), please click here. The Community Garden is located at the George Washington Carver Middle School, 4410 McKinley Avenue, in Los Angeles, on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 9 am-12pm. All are welcome.

Volunteer Community Garden Workday schedule and planned tasks:

  • June 29:  Groundbreaking - new mounting of soil for the food production beds
  • July 27:  Cooling tube install, paint & finishes, strawbale planting
  • August 31:  First shared meal in the KitchenPOD with community members
  • Sept. 28:  Straw Bale installation around the POD & Wrap Party!
  • Oct. 26:  Ribbon Cutting and Harvest Celebration
"We are proud to continue our tradition of investing in underserved communities, and this project speaks to our values of creating access to nature and improving community health while showcasing a number of sustainable design principles," states Ben Stapleton, Executive Director of USGBC-CA.

The USGBC California Annual Environmental Justice Project was initiated to close the divide between social justice and environmental resilience, acknowledging that the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect the communities most in need. The Project committee works to ensure that the chosen project garners community support, possesses an educational and sustainable focus, can be replicated, and enhances various socio-economic conditions. In addition to monetary support from USGBC-CA for the Project, the committee offers assistance in the areas of design, development, volunteer backing, and resource referrals to ensure that the recipient team can effectively serve its target community.

Past impactful Legacy Projects include the the Reverence Project Survivor's Healing Garde, the Boyle Heights Resilience Hub, the EcoUrban / Arroyo HS Garden in El Monte, the Veggie Bus Project in South Central LA, the EcoTech Makerspace in Gardena, and more. Please click here for more information on this year's Legacy Project and the June 29, 2024 event.

If you would like to get involved in the Environmental Justice Committee, please contact [email protected]. To contribute to this project or any other sponsorship support, please email [email protected].

LMU Presents 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Loyola Marymount University’s seventh Shakespeare on the Bluff summer festival features performances of “Much Ado About Nothing” June 20-22 and “Troilus & Cressida” July 18-20.

The popular, free, and family-friendly event is presented by LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts and Theatre Arts program. As Shakespeare wrote in “Much Ado About Nothing” — “the world must be peopled!” — everyone is invited to enjoy these timeless tales at the outdoor Drollinger Family Stage in Lawton Plaza on the Westchester campus.

“We’re thrilled to be back in front of audiences with free live performances of Shakespeare, featuring both student and professional performers,” said Kevin Wetmore, professor of theatre arts and artistic director of Shakespeare on the Bluff. “This summer, we present a fun family comedy and a rarely seen dark war drama. “Much Ado About Nothing” is always a riot, and with its mix of clever and silly characters, will delight the whole family. “Troilus and Cressida” is a difficult play about love during the Trojan War, featuring an exciting and diverse cast.”

LMU CFA Dean Bryant Keith Alexander added: “I am excited to welcome our faithful audiences from the LMU campus, Westchester, and Playa Vista, along with our ever-growing visitors from around Los Angeles, to our beautiful campus. ‘Shakespeare on the Bluff’ has become a wonderful community engagement that explores both the critical and creative that comes with our productions of the Bard and permeates throughout the College of Communication and Fine Arts.”

All shows begin at 8 p.m. and are roughly 90 minutes long. Low lawn chairs and picnics on the lawn are welcome; the doors open at 6 p.m. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Performances

“Much Ado About Nothing,” directed by Jim Holmes
June 20-22, 2024, 8 p.m.
Shakespeare’s beloved comedy involves misunderstandings, needlessly complex schemes, and things overheard. Young soldier Claudio and fair Hero fall in love, but when villain Don John plots to besmirch her reputation and ruin their marriage, it takes an entire village, including their witty friends Beatrice and Benedict, her wise father, and a group of well-meaning but none-too-bright watchmen, to unmask the villains, reunite the lovers, and save the day.

“Troilus & Cressida,” directed by Kevin Wetmore
July 18-20, 2024, 8 p.m.
“Troilus and Cressida” is Shakespeare’s story of love and relationships during the Trojan War. Agamemnon has brought the Greeks to recapture Helen of Troy, bringing with him Menelaus, Ulysses, Ajax, and other Greek princes to battle with the princes of Troy: Hector, Aeneus, and young Troilus, who is in love with Cressida. But when Cressida is traded to the Greeks as part of an exchange, he sneaks into the Greek camp to learn that all is horrible in love and war. A bitter play about war and relationships and how we cope with learning that reality does not match our ideals, presented in a gender-reversed production.
