AAJA turns 40: Learn How the Group Got its Start in L.A.

Forty years ago, a group of Los Angeles-based journalists banded together to form the Asian American Journalists Association, a group dedicated to supporting and organizing Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the news media.

On Friday, some of those same founders will describe that critical moment in journalism history, as part of the virtual panel  “AAJA Founders Forum: Origin Story.”

The panel, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of AAJA and the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, will be held at 6 p.m. and kick off AAJA's 40th anniversary.

Friday's virtual panel comes at a critical time, with AAJA serving as a vital resource for journalists reporting on the rise of anti-Asian racism and hate crimes.

The panel will feature AAJA co-founders Bill Sing, David Kishiyama and Nancy Yoshihara, all of whom worked at the Los Angeles Times; Frank Kwan, then of NBC4; and Dwight Chuman, then of the Rafu Shimpo.

The forum will be moderated by ABC 7 news anchor David Ono.

WHAT: Virtual panel:  “AAJA Founders Forum: Origin Story.”

WHO: Bill Sing, David Kishiyama, Nancy Yoshihara, Frank Kwan, Dwight Chuman, David Ono.

Analysis of IBEW Local 18's pre-craft trainee (UPCT) program

Friends,

You are invited to a briefing about a new report commissioned by Community Change, analyzing IBEW Local 18's pre-craft trainee (UPCT) program that provides important lessons about how to successfully move low-wage workers into stable, high-paying public sector jobs.

In Los Angeles, the program has been hugely successful, with 83% of participants hired into a public sector job at a median hourly wage of $39.15 per hour. Seventy-seven percent of respondents were people of color, all previously unemployed or in low-wage jobs. A number of those hired were previously incarcerated.

The UPCT program is a cornerstone of the RePower LA coalition's efforts to help make clean energy and good jobs at the LA Department of Water and Power (DWP) accessible to all Angelenos while lowering their utility bills. The program is run by IBEW Local 18, one of the anchor partners of RePower LA, along with SCOPE and LAANE.

The report's findings have big implications. The Biden administration pivots to advancing an infrastructure plan that will seek to create jobs that can be accessible by low-wage workers and the unemployed, including the millions of Black, brown, and immigrant workers who were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The briefing will be held Thursday, April 15, 2021, from 10 am-11:30 am PT/1 pm-2:30 pm ET.

Speakers will include Virginia Parks, Ph.D., Professor at UC, Irvine, and author of the report; Shawn McCloud, Assistant Business Manager of IBEW Local 18 and manager of the UPCT program; Cynthia McLain-Hill, President of the Board of Commissioners of LA Department of Water and Power; Agustin Cabrera, Director of RePower LA.
Participant(s) from the UPCT program will share their stories.

AGENDA

Teleconference: City Planner Dick Platkin on Why L.A. Times Refuses to Report that SB 9 Allows 8 Units Not “Duplexes.”

Image

This is an RSVP-only teleconference. Please register HERE at this link by noon Friday . Any problems registering email [email protected].

Former L.A. city planner Dick Platkin is a major critic of “upzoning” and “trickle-down” laws that fail to build affordable housing but DO destroy communities. Mr. Platkin will lay out why newsrooms fail to inform the public, don’t appear to know what’s going on, and side with huge financial interests over residents and readers.

Join us Sat., March 20 at 10 am!

  • Why is news coverage on housing law so unusually one-sided and inaccurate
  • Are the zoning and land-use laws too complex for overworked journalists?
  • What steps can you take to see meaningful coverage in your paper?
  • Why Dick Platkin decided to launch his own column!

You can start now, by sending these facts to reporters you read. They’ll be stunned: Fact sheet opposing SB 9 ; Fact sheet opposing SB 10 ; Renne Public Policy Group Analysis of the disaster that is SB 9.

In 2021, we face a huge battle against money-driven bad bills. We are little guys against big bucks. So please donate to Livable California now here, as we rely on you!

Poor media coverage in 2020, and incredible factual errors in what little was published about disastrous SB 1120, make it crucial to reach out to overwhelmed journalists.

So RSVP NOW to join Dick Platkin on Sat. at 10 am! Please register HERE at this link by noon Friday . Any problems registering email [email protected].. It’s required!

We ask that you DONATE today, and we thank you so very much!

Livable California is a non-profit statewide group of community leaders, activists and local elected officials. We believe in local answers to the housing affordability crisis. Our robust fight requires trips to Sacramento & a lobbyist going toe-to-toe with power. Please donate generously to LivableCalifornia.org here.
