Title

Mastering our Lives as Citizens through Civic Reach

Description
Our belief as Americans in the mythical power of our individualistic eminence has poorly equipped us throughout U.S. history to act as citizens with shared ownership in the quality of our democracy and government. Indeed, the mere statement that “we are governed” riles many Americans. Strong individualist tendencies handed to us through centuries provoke many in our society to regard government and public affairs generally as intrusive in their lives. Overcoming the isolation that is heir to unbridled individualism demands a new human capacity: the instinct resident in all of us to master civic reach and devote that reach to more authentic lives as true citizens concerned not only about ourselves but about all of us, together. Civic reach requires a certain humility, even awe, and a confident grasp of the complex social, economic, political and cultural forces that seeth and settle, conserve and disrupt, humanize and divide the communities and special places we treat as our homeplaces, but treat passively as if they did not need our involvement. In this webinar, Coro’s 2021 Crystal Eagle Award Honoree Paul Vandeventer, Coro alum and President & CEO of Community Partners, will share thoughts and ideas shaped by his upbringing, his Coro training and his nearly 30 years of supporting through Community Partners the acceleration of ideas into action that advance the public good.

This webinar will be moderated by Coro’s 2020 Crystal Eagle Award honoree Joe Lumarda, Coro alum and Senior Vice President and Private Wealth Advisor for Capital Group Private Client Services.

CA Department of Public Health Urges Immigrants to Get Vaccinated

CDPH Joins Labor and Immigrants Rights Advocates to Encourage Immigrant Workers and Families to Continue Getting COVID-19 Vaccinations

LOS ANGELES—The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will join a diverse group of labor and immigrants rights advocates for a press conference encouraging immigrant workers and their families to continue getting COVID-19 vaccinations, as part of the state’s ongoing work to increase immunity in communities hardest hit by the pandemic and reopen by June 15.

The event will take place at the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, in partnership with St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, where 360 first-dose vaccinations are being allocated to immigrant workers. Reaching high vaccination rates among immigrant communities of all ethnicities is needed to help keep essential workers safe on the job and to begin reopening more parts of the economy.

COVID-19 vaccination eligibility was expanded last week to everyone age 16+. Vaccinations are open to all regardless of immigration status. For the latest vaccine information from the state, visit VaccinateALL58.com.

LA City Council Cmte To Discuss Citywide Phaseout of Oil Drilling

I’m reaching out to inform you that on Tuesday 4/20 at 1:00 pm PST the LA City Council Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee will meet to discuss the proposal to pursue a city-wide phase-out of oil drilling in LA neighborhoods.

After years of advocacy and health concerns from impacted residents and a coalition of environmental justice & healthy organizations with STAND-L.A., Los Angeles City Council is finally taking action to address this health, climate, and urban planning problem. If passed, the motion would propel the City toward a city-wide phase-out of oil and gas drilling by declaring drilling a non-conforming land-use. This would be unprecedented action from a major City to model for the world not only what a just transition away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy looks like, but also what a compassionate dismantling of existing harmful oil operations could look like. While most recent policy actions on oil and gas address only future operations, the City of LA is preparing to address the wells that are already causing health and climate harm.

Introduced by Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Paul Krekorian, this motion has passed out of the Environment, EJ, and Climate Committee and will potentially be reviewed by two other committees before being voted on by the full Council. Frontline residents are literally holding their breath while LA City Council shuffles this motion through committees until a full vote. Residents, organizers, and members of STAND-LA will deliver public comments on Tuesday and urge the PLUM committee to urgently move forward with this motion with no further delay.
