“Fudge,” XL Bully Saved in Scotland

A Scottish attorney who saved an XL bully pup, who had done nothing wrong, made British legal history recently in the process, the Daily Record reported.

Seven-month-old Fudge, an XL Bully, was facing euthanasia because she was too young to be spayed in time to comply with new British legislation to manage this breed which had harmed and killed in numerous vicious attacks.

Under the new rules, owners were required to register for an exemption to legally keep an XL bully after July 31, 2024, with additional restrictions that the dog must be on a leash at all times and muzzled when in a public place, and must also be insured, microchipped, and spayed.

Margaret Keely, 53, from Glasgow, sought the assistance of attorney/solicitor  to solicitor Sharon Collins after realizing her pup would be too young to be sterilized and would miss the deadline by days. However, this means Fudge could be impounded and euthanized for non-compliance although she had done nothing wrong.

Sharon agreed to defend Fudge without charge and she made legal history by becoming the first to be granted an extension to the exemption.

(Author’s note:  Any healthy female dog or cat can, and should be spayed at four months of age. This has been an accepted and effective tool in controlling pet overpopulation and reducing aggression in cats/dogs in the U.S. for over twenty years. Sharon, who has her own legal firm, said: “Margaret was distraught. No one would take on the case. She was worried that Fudge would be destroyed so we had to try to get an extension.

“She’s a responsible owner, so I started working on the case and realized it was the first of its type in the country.”

Since applications for an exemption certificate had closed, new ones must be granted by a court order, and the penalties for not having one include a significant fine or even a jail term.

Sharon said: “We were preparing to take the case to the High Court, but the extension was eventually granted, giving time to get Fudge spayed and be fully compliant with legislation.

“It has made legal history as Fudge is the first dog in Scotland to have this type of extension granted.”

“I can’t thank her enough. Nobody else was interested in the case,” she said.

A more recent post asked, “What is the price of Hulk the Pitbull?”

It was answered: “Hulk, the well-known Pitbull guard dog, is now a father. The 175-pound dog, which is worth $500,00 due to his size and guarding abilities, recently welcomed a litter eight puppies that is estimated to be worth another $500,000, combined.”
