SMOK Novo 5 Not Hitting: What’s the Problem?

420 FILE

POD VAPES - The SMOK Novo 5 is one of the latest devices in a long-running series of pod vapes that’s well known for its excellent reliability and performance. SMOK’s reputation for quality is well earned; there are reports of people using older Novo devices for many years with no issues. If you’ve been using your Novo 5 for a while, in fact, you’re probably completely confident that it’s going to produce a big, satisfying cloud of vapor every time you press the button – which means it'll be quite a surprise if your Novo 5 isn’t hitting.

You’re stuck with a SMOK Novo 5 that’s not hitting, and you’re trying to figure out what you should do next. What’s the problem? In this guide, we’ll run through the most common reasons why a Novo 5 might not work and explain what you need to do.

Turn the Novo 5 On

If you’re new to the SMOK Novo 5 or to refillable vapes in general, you might not be aware of the fact that your device can turn on and off. If your Novo 5 isn’t working, the answer could be as simple as turning the device on. To do that, just press the five button five times. The display should turn on in response. If that doesn’t happen, continue to the next section to troubleshoot the issue further.

Charge the Novo 5

If your Novo 5 doesn’t do anything when you press the fire button five times, you should check the battery next because it’s most likely dead. Charge the battery by connecting the device to your computer with a USB cable. When you do that, the screen should turn on and display a battery indicator. If your device is now charging successfully, wait about an hour and try vaping again. You should find that your Novo 5 is now working.

If your device’s screen doesn’t turn on, it’s not charging. Follow these steps to troubleshoot it.

  • Try charging the Novo 5 with a different USB cable. It’s likely that something is wrong with the cable you’re trying to use.
  • Connect the Novo 5 to a different power source. If you’re using your computer, try connecting the Novo 5 to a wall adapter with an output of 5 volts, 1 amp. Avoid charging the Novo 5 or any other vaping device with a quick-charging adapter for a computer or mobile phone.
  • Make sure that the Novo 5’s charging port is clean. If dust or lint is stuck inside the port, you can use a toothpick to pry it out.

Try Both Inhale-Based and Button-Based Firing

Did you know that the SMOK Novo 5 supports both inhale-based and button-based firing? That’s a particularly useful feature if your Novo 5 isn’t hitting because if one firing method doesn’t work, the other might – and that can help you track down the source of the problem.

  • If inhale-based firing works but button-based firing doesn’t, it’s possible that the fire button on your Novo 5 is locked. You can unlock the button by clicking it three times.
  • If button-based firing works but inhale-based firing doesn’t, there might be a problem with your device’s airflow system. The most common cause of this type of issue is that the pod has leaked. We’ll discuss that next.

Remove the Pod and Check for a Leak

If your Novo 5 isn’t hitting – and your certain that the device is charged and turned on – you should remove the pod and see if e-liquid has leaked out of it. It’s especially likely that your pod has leaked if you’ve ever heard a gurgling noise while vaping or if your device works with the fire button only.

Do you see vape juice under the pod? Here’s what you should do next.

Use paper towels to dry the pod and the chamber at the top of the Novo 5 completely.

  • Place your mouth over the Novo 5’s airflow ring while holding a paper towel over the pod chamber. Blow firmly through the airflow ring. Can you see e-liquid in the pod chamber? Dry it completely and blow through the airflow ring again. Repeat the process until the chamber is dry.
  • Try using your Novo 5 again. You should find that it works now.

To prevent your Novo 5 from leaking again in the future, remember these two tips.

  • Use gentle air pressure when you vape. If you hear gurgling when you use your Novo 5, you’re puffing too hard. Using too much air pressure can cause the pod’s atomizer coil assembly to flood.
  • When you fill the Novo 5 pod, always leave a little empty space at the top. If you fill the pod all the way to the top, you’ll push e-liquid out of the pod when you replace the mouthpiece.

Make Sure You’re Using the Right Pod

One of the fun things about the SMOK Novo series is that many of the devices in the series are compatible with several different types of pods. Between all of the different pod styles and resistances, you can enjoy a wide variety of experiences. The Novo 5, however, is a little different because it’s not compatible with a variety of different pods – it only works with SMOK Novo 5 pods.

If you previously used a different Novo vape – which might have been compatible with SMOK Novo, Novo 2 and Novo 2X pods – it’s important to understand that your old pods won’t work with the Novo 5. If you’re able to get a different pod to fit in the device at all, you’ll probably see an error message when you try to use it.

Check for an Error Message

Have the previous tips in this article helped you to get your Novo 5 fixed? If not, the next thing that you should do is check the screen for an error message. If you see a message like “Atomizer Short” or “Check Battery,” you’ll know exactly what you need to do to resolve the issue.

Replace the Pod

If your Novo 5 is turning on but isn’t hitting – and you’ve tried all of the other tips in this article – it’s likely that the pod you’re trying to use has an issue. SMOK makes Novo pods by the millions, and they generally work perfectly. You may encounter a dud once in a while, though – and if that’s what has happened to you, replacing the pod should fix the problem.
