MAJOR CLEAN-UP - Every piece of plastic picked up before it reaches the ocean is one less threat to marine life, beaches, and the food chain.
That's the message behind Plastic Free July, a worldwide movement encouraging people to reduce single-use plastics and take direct action to protect the environment. This month, Los Angeles residents have three opportunities to do just that through a series of free community cleanup events organized by LA Waterkeeper.
The timing couldn't be more appropriate.
According to environmental experts, July 5 is often called "the Trashiest Day of the Year" because of the enormous amount of litter left behind after Independence Day celebrations. Much of that debris eventually washes through storm drains into the Los Angeles River, Ballona Creek, the San Gabriel River, Santa Monica Bay, and ultimately the Pacific Ocean.
Plastic pollution has become one of the defining environmental challenges of our time. Single-use bottles, food containers, bags, straws, and countless small plastic items break down into microplastics that are consumed by fish, seabirds, marine mammals—and ultimately enter the human food chain.
LA Waterkeeper hopes volunteers can help stop that cycle before it begins.

Why It Matters
Plastic pollution isn't simply an aesthetic problem.
Once plastic reaches rivers and the ocean, it can persist for decades, breaking into increasingly smaller fragments that are nearly impossible to remove. Marine animals often mistake these particles for food, while larger plastic debris entangles wildlife and damages sensitive coastal habitats.
Keeping litter out of waterways before it reaches the Pacific is one of the most effective—and least expensive—ways to reduce ocean pollution.
For Angelenos looking to make a difference, Plastic Free July offers an easy place to start: spend a few hours outdoors, help clean a local park, river, or beach, and contribute to protecting Southern California's coast for future generations.
