SHOCKER—I hear it often: “Seems like you’re always looking at LA’s warts. It’s depressing.”
And, I explain … it’s hard to hold our elected’s feet to the fire and not sound a trifle bitchy. I think we’ve broken through the cranky glass wall however … in Today’s CityWatch.
The California Senate … leading the way for the nation … pushed a ‘single payer’ health care bill over the first hurdle this week and Deirdre Fulton says a ‘health care plan for the people’ is lookin’ good. And, that’s GOOD NEWS.
This is the 25th anniversary of the 1992 so-called Rodney King riots. Parts of LA remain scarred and empty. A reminder of the wreckage and pain. But Roberto Suro and Gary Painter take us through the years since anger ruled our streets and does a respectable job of convincing us that Los Angeles is better for the struggle and on the rise. And, that’s GOOD NEWS.
It’s been 15 years since the first Neighborhood Council was certified. There are 97 certified NCs today and a fair number of them are functioning and making a difference. Greening their neighborhoods. Setting up emergency preparedness programs. Providing a voice for their communities. And, that’s GOOD NEWS.
