MOVE LA - Save The Date for Transportation Conversation 9

Ballot measures R, M and H will transform Los Angeles County into a more livable, sustainable and equitable place in which to live. But with these game-changing measures under our belts we are bringing our coalition together again for another of our Annual Transportation Conversations — the 9th! — in order to discuss which problems might all tackle next.

REGISTER HERE TO RECEIVE EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTED REGISTRATION for Transportation Conversation 9 at the Conference Center at LA Cathedral on October 27th.

Our coalition has been expanded beyond the original business-labor-environmental constituencies. It now includes faith-based organizations, advocates for social justice and for a more bike and pedestrian-friendly LA County, seniors, people with disabilities, and students. And as our coalition expanded, perhaps our ambitions should expand too.

What’s next LA? Of course we should engage in the implementation of Measures R and M. Our rail system is growing, but bus ridership is declining, and that's not good enough when voters just approved major new operations funding.

Should we also work to make sure the affordable housing program in LA County is more robust, especially near transit stations, and that anti-displacement strategies are in place?

Should we join our environmental & environmental justice allies to seek a real solution to LA County's longstanding air pollution challenge while also achieving enormous reductions in greenhouse gases?

JOIN US AT the Conference Center at LA Cathedral on October 27th from 8:30am to 4:30.

LA WOMEN SPONSOR FREE ADOPTIONS AT LA COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTERS

LA WOMEN SPONSOR FREE ADOPTIONS AT LA COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTERS

Los Angeles residents Erika Brunson and Margie Perenchio will pay adoption fees at four LA County animal shelters beginning Friday, August 4th through Sunday, August 6th as part of PRAI Beauty’s “Free the Shelters” campaign. The campaign was launched in May and has helped more than 650 animals get adopted at 10 shelters across the country.

WHAT:

Adoption fees waived at four LA County animal shelters the weekend of August 4th thanks to the generosity of LA residents Erika Brunson and Margie Perenchio.

WHERE:

Participating shelters include:  East Valley Shelter, 14409 Vanowen St., Van Nuys; Harbor Shelter, 957 Gaffey Street, San Pedro; North Central Shelter, 3201 Lacy Street, LA and South LA Shelter, 1850 West 60th Street, LA.

WHEN:

Friday, August 4th through Saturday, August 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 6th 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WHO:

Adoption fees will be paid by LA residents Erika Brunson and Margie Perenchio. Brunson and Perenchio as part of “Free the Shelters” started by Cathy Kangas, CEO and Founder of PRAI Beauty. The three women are all members of the board of directors of The Humane Society of the United States.

There are a total of 652 dogs and 457 cats at the four participating LA Shelters.  Cathy Kangas will announce the LA event during her August 3rd appearance on HSN-TV where she sells PRAI Beauty, her successful skincare line that donates a portion of every sale to helping animals.

WHY:

Shelters should be short-term foster homes rather than a long-term jail sentence for companion animals.  “Free the Shelters” has been rolled out across the country resulting in more than 650 animals finding a permanent home. About 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs – about one every 13 seconds – are put down in U.S. animal shelters each year.  Research has shown that removing adoption fees increases the number and speed of pet adoptions and reduces euthanasia.

Myths and Realities of Lobbying in Los Angeles

Los Angeles doesn't have its own version of K Street, where Washington, D.C.'s, industry of power brokers sets up shop. Nonetheless, Los Angeles's city bureaucracy, and those of other local cities, is vast and it too has its corps of consultants and lobbyists who advocate for legislation and assist clients with projects. Among all local lobbying efforts, perhaps none are as numerous, intense, or contentious as those surrounding development. From variances, to general plan amendments, to planning commission hearings, and city council hearings, many developers would be lost without experts to guide them and, indeed, to advocate for them.

WUF is pleased to bring together a panel to explain what lobbying is and is not in the Los Angeles area. They will discuss lobbyists' roles and legal limitations, the projects they work on, the influence that lobbyists have, and the limits of that influence. And they will address common refrains about favoritism and the elevation of "special interests" over the common good.

FOLAR BRINGS BACK AMERICA'S LARGEST URBAN RIVER CLEANUP

FOLAR BRINGS BACK AMERICA'S LARGEST URBAN RIVER CLEANUP
APRIL 15, 22, 29

LOS ANGELES (April 5, 2017)  Friends of the LA River (FOLAR) is proud to present the 28th Annual Great LA River CleanUp: La Gran Limpieza (CleanUp). FOLAR’s annual CleanUp has exploded in recent years, shattering records for volunteer turnout and trash collected, and is the largest urban river cleanup in America. The 2016 CleanUp attracted 9,000 volunteers—individuals and groups—who removed over 70 tons of trash from the LA River at more than a dozen sites. The 2017 CleanUp will be held at 14 sites along the entire length of the LA River on the last three Saturdays of Earth Month (April 15th, 22nd, and 29th) 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Registration for volunteers is open at www.folar.org/cleanup.

The CleanUp is a popular event for Angelenos of all ages and backgrounds, attracting families, students, elected officials, and hipsters to the River with FOLAR every April. The range of volunteer groups, along with the 1000s of individuals, demonstrates the ubiquitous interest in and passion for the LA River. Volunteer groups range from scout troops, utilities, and entertainment, to religious organizations, labor unions, and a bevy of non-profits.

“The Great LA River CleanUp is the defining event on the LA River. It’s become the largest urban river cleanup in America; last year had 9,000 volunteers who picked up 70 tons of trash,” states Marissa Christiansen, FOLAR’s Executive Director. “When Angelenos get involved with their River, they often start at our CleanUp.”

“Each area of the Los Angeles River is unique and requires special attention and appreciation,” says Lewis MacAdams, FOLAR’s Founder. The CleanUp focuses primarily on the soft-bottomed and green sections of the LA River which are, in themselves, incredibly diverse. The sites range from the bucolic Sepulveda Basin in the San Fernando Valley to the Golden Shore Marine Reserve in Long Beach, where dolphins and seals are a common sight.

The CleanUp takes place at the following 14 handpicked sites along the 51-mile river, on the last three Saturdays of April, each day from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm:

April 15 - Upper River:  Bette Davis Picnic Area / Sepulveda Basin at Balboa Blvd / Tujunga Wash at Haines Canyon Channel

April 22 - Mid River:  Arroyo Seco Confluence / Bowtie Parcel at Fletcher Drive / The Frog Spot / Los Feliz Blvd / Marsh Street Nature Park / Steelhead Park / Sunnynook Footbridge

April 29 - Lower River:  Compton Creek at Artesia Metro Station / Compton Creek at Del Amo Metro Station/ Golden Shore Marine Reserve / Willow Street Estuary

In addition to the trash pick-up, volunteers will be entertained by popular local bands that come to the CleanUp to connect with the LA River community. Select sites will also feature FOLAR’s 38’ mobile visitor and education center – the LA River Rover.

Volunteers will receive a FOLAR reusable tote bag, a custom-designed FOLAR t-shirt, and a gift card from Rubio’s Coastal Grill. Refreshments, snacks, and sunblock will all be on hand to keep volunteers healthy and hydrated.

The 2017 CleanUp is made possible through sponsorships from the City of Long Beach Clean Team, long-time partners REI Co-op, Toyota Financial Services, and Rubio’s Coastal Grill, who are joined by new sponsors Soylent and Skanska as well as many others. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 2017 CleanUp, information about sponsorships is available at www.folar.org/cleanup/sponsor.

Angelenos can register for the CleanUp and get more information at www.folar.org/cleanup. Group registration is available for groups of 10 or more volunteers and is available at www.folar.org/cleanup/groups.

“When you see so many people on the River working together in their FOLAR shirts it warms your heart,” adds Christansen. “I am so inspired when I think about countless members of the River community pouring their love into our River over the last 28 years.”

Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR):
Founded in 1986, FOLAR is an independent 501c(3) nonprofit whose mission is to ensure a publicly accessible and ecologically vibrant Los Angeles River by inspiring River stewardship through community engagement, education, advocacy, and thought leadership.
