WESTSIDE - In a large field that seems to be consolidating to just a few, Venice attorney Mike Newhouse is clearly claiming the public safety lane in his race to succeed the retiring Ben Allen in Sacramento.

The former Los Angeles Planning Commission member and Venice Neighborhood Council President is focused on the core issues of homelessness and crime while touting his deep support as the candidate of cops and the men and women in blue.

Newhouse, released his first video ad of the campaign, a 30-second spot introducing voters to his "commonsense solutions" that will make California more affordable and safer to backup a long list of endorsements from the public safety community.

Newhouse adds a no-nonsense approach to the question of homeless encampments and RVs, seeking to bring people inside now.

With billions spent on solving the encampment crisis at the federal, state and local levels, polling data still suggests that enough is not being done, and improvement has been slow to non-existent.

Newhouse, who does the voiceover asks the following:

“Are you fed up with Sacramento not getting the job done? I’m with you. Nobody should have to live on the streets. Enough with the encampments and RVs. Residents shouldn’t have to put up with it. We need commonsense solutions that work. I’m a small businessman and educator, and I’ll get results.Enforce anti-campaign laws, move people indoors, reduce costs, and protect our beaches and drinking water. I’m proud to be the police-endorsed Democrat. Let’s bring California back.”

Newhouse has earned the support of a strong and growing coalition of law enforcement associations including the California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA), the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), the California Fraternal Order of Police (CAFOP), the LA Airport Police Officers Association (LAAPOA), the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association (LAPPOA), and multiple local police associations throughout the district.

Homelessness, and how to handle it as well as safe streets and public safety are the dominant issues on the minds of voters as the field begins to clarify and crystalize beyond the general feelings regarding affordability or high gas prices.

Newhouse and Goldsmith are clearly the moderates in the race, with Dr. Sion Roy's appeal more center left.

Both Newhouse and Brian Goldsmith are now up on the air with television spots while Dr.  Roy has touted the critical endorsement of the California Democratic Party in recent mailings.

The race is expected to be one of the costliest senate primaries in the state for this open seat with Goldsmith leading the pack in terms of contributions and expenditures.

This sprawling coastal district is one of the more affluent in the state, stretching north to Malibu and Calabasas, while weaving its way through portions of Los Angeles and southward to the beach cities of Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo, as well as Rancho Palos Verdes and the city of Torrance.
