500 Parents and Students Expected for First-ever LA School Board Candidate Forum for Charter School Families

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center will host the three candidates hoping to represent the East San Fernando Valley.

  

WHAT: On March 5, three seats are up for election on the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) board. Board members make major decisions affecting local students, including those who attend charter schools. That’s why Families That Can, a statewide organization of charter school parents, is hosting the first-ever board candidate forum for charter families in partnership with the 22 charter schools in the East San Fernando Valley. There are currently more than 200 charter schools in LAUSD, serving more than 110,000 students, more than in any other district in the country.

WHO: All three candidates for Board District 6 are confirmed:

·         Maria Cano

·         Monica Ratliff

·         Antonio Sanchez 

Fidel Ramirez of Youth Policy Institute will be moderator for the forum.

6 p.m. - The forum will start at 6 p.m. on the dot and wrap up at 7:30 p.m.

WHY: Vaughn Next Century Learning Center is a K-12 charter public school serving 2,700 students and one of the first charter schools in California. Charter schools are tuition-free, public schools open to all students. This year is the 20th anniversary of California charter schools. Vaughn became one of the first charter schools in the state when it converted into a charter in 1993.
