Councilman Koretz Looks to Downsize ‘McMansions’

ARCHIVE

PARK LABREA NEWS-The Los Angeles City Council is seeking to limit the construction of large houses commonly referred to as “McMansions” after receiving complaints that new houses are popping up throughout the city and are threatening the character of older neighborhoods.

Some homeowners are concerned that some new houses, such as this one on Mansfield Avenue, are out of character with the neighborhood.

Councilman Paul Koretz, 5th District, has authored a motion that would address what some people have described as “loopholes” in the city’s existing Baseline Mansionization Ordinance (BMO), which was created in 2008.

“I started this in the Beverly Grove area five years ago when I was running for election because when I was going door-to-door, people were asking me for relief. What was happening to Beverly Grove has been happening in neighborhoods all over the city,” Koretz said. “There are all kinds of exemptions that allow for the building of out-of-size, towering buildings close to the lot lines.”  (Read the rest here.)
