Getty Image.)* His lies largely hit their own wall of derision: The Southern Border Communities Coalition called his visit “trite political theater," and Gov. Gavin Newsom [blasted ](https://www.gov.ca.gov/2019/04/05/newsom-blasts-pres-trump/)his cruelty with, “Since our founding, this country has been a place of refuge. His words show a total disregard of the Constitution, our justice system, and what it means to be an American." Newsom could have added, "what it means to be a human being." Trump arrived at the border too late to witness last December's gruesome, entirely preventable deaths of two children in the custody of his U.S. Customs and Border Protection. [Jakelin ](https://twitter.com/hashtag/JusticeForJakelin?src=hash)Caal Maquin, 7, who had traveled from Guatemala to the border with her father, [died ](https://www.theroot.com/seven-year-old-girl-in-u-s-custody-at-mexican-border-g-1831113202)two days after being detained; by the time she was taken to a hospital in El Paso, her fever was 105.7 degrees, she was vomiting and having [seizures](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/14/1819134/-Seven-year-old-girl-dies-just-hours-after-being-taken-into-custody-by-border-agents), and she could barely breathe. A couple of weeks later, Felipe Gómez Alonzo, 8, also from Guatemala, died in CBP custody after spending six days being [shuffled ](https://www.thedailybeast.com/doctors-warn-more-children-in-border-patrol-stations-could-die-like-felipe-and-jakelin)from cold facility to cold facility; he died on Christmas Eve. Trump's monstrous [response](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-fact-check-circumstances-death-migrant-girl-jakelin-caal-maquin-ap/) to these tragedies: He [insisted](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/20/1820531/-Attorneys-say-border-agents-gave-Jakelin-Maquin-no-water-during-the-eight-hours-she-was-detained) "we've done a fantastic job" caring for migrants, whined "any deaths are strictly the fault of Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies," and, most grotesquely, [blamed](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/31/1822647/-In-lie-laden-tirade-Trump-blames-political-opponents-for-deaths-of-two-children-in-US-custody) the victims, arguing that both kids were already dehydrated and sick when they arrived - flagrant lies repeatedly contradicted by their grieving[ parents](https://www.businessinsider.com/mother-of-8-year-old-migrant-boy-says-he-wasnt-sick-on-journey-to-us-2018-12) and [multiple](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/10/1825090/-Mexican-shelter-says-boy-who-later-died-in-U-S-custody-was-in-perfect-health-condition) [officials. ](http://time.com/5562174/felipe-gomez-alonzo-died-flu-infection/) And, now, by the release of both autopsy results this week. The El Paso Medical Examiner [wrote ](https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2019/03/29/jakelin-caal-autopsy-report-released-el-paso-medical-examiner-migrant-girl/3313850002/)that Jakelin died of [“](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/03/30/jakelin-caal-autopsy-report-released-infection-el-paso-medical-examiner-migrant-girl/3319339002/)[a rapidly progressive infection”](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/03/30/jakelin-caal-autopsy-report-released-infection-el-paso-medical-examiner-migrant-girl/3319339002/) known as streptococcal sepsis; bacteria was found in her lungs, adrenal gland, liver and spleen, leading to multiple organ failure. Doctors [told ](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/29/us/migrant-girl-death.html)the *New York Times* her infection was so aggressive she likely “would have been visibly sick for many hours” before her death. Days later, the same office[ found](https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2019/04/04/migrant-boy-guatemala-died-flu-new-mexico-medical-examiner-confirms/3364783002/) Felipe also [died ](https://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-guatemalan-boy-20190403-story.html)of a "rapid, progressive infection" - in his case, flu - that led to organ failure. Officials [wrote](http://hscnews.unm.edu/news/statement-regarding-the-death-of-felipe-gomez-alonzo) they hoped the release of information would bring "closure," but God knows why it would: In truth, both infections could have been easily treated with common antibiotics. Because there is no low to which he will not go, Trump [responded ](https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1111732275765485572)to the findings by *again* [attacking](https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1111735737018474496) dead children's parents. Congressional Democrats, being human, instead announced[ probes](https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/422904-hoyer-vows-hearings-after-latest-death-of-migrant-child-in-us-custody) into both deaths. They also [visited](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/8/1824487/-Following-border-visit-Democrats-vow-to-continue-probe-into-child-s-death-under-US-custody) the facilities where they were detained; they found inadequate food/water and reportedly what will be [scarred-for-life](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/family-separation-one-year-later_n_5ca4cda4e4b094d3f5c50ede) children lying on concrete floors in frigid rooms with loud noises and lights on all night, and [concluded, ](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/20/1820531/-Attorneys-say-border-agents-gave-Jakelin-Maquin-no-water-during-the-eight-hours-she-was-detained)“The only reason this facility is still open is because the cameras can’t get in.” And the[ abuses](https://twitter.com/hashtag/EndFamilySeparation?src=hash) continue. They are[ led ](https://twitter.com/hashtag/KirstjenNielsen?src=hash)in large part by Homeland Security [ghoul ](https://t.co/oFgnRpXoxh)Kirstjen "Eichmann" Nielson, who once declared "they're not cages - there are places to sit" and has called for deporting children and detaining their families to solve the border's “growing crisis.” The real crisis, many say, is the medical neglect at border facilities and [immigration jails ](https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/06/20/code-red/fatal-consequences-dangerously-substandard-medical-care-immigration)that has led to at least 22 [deaths](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/22-immigrants-died-ice-detention-centers-during-past-2-years-n954781)[, ](https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/06/20/code-red/fatal-consequences-dangerously-substandard-medical-care-immigration)all [preventable](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/hours-before-her-collapse-in-us-custody-a-dying-migrant-childs-condition-went-unnoticed/2018/12/14/1c454d18-ffb8-11e8-862a-b6a6f3ce8199_story.html?utm_term=.203f2edaba93), including Jakelin, Felipe, and 19-month-old [Mariee Juarez. ](https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/28/us/texas-ice-child-death/index.html)Doctors at those sites [report ](https://www.statnews.com/2019/01/10/medical-neglect-migrants-detention/)horrific conditions "unsafe for adults and deadly for children," from not enough [water](https://www.npr.org/2018/07/18/629998961/lawsuit-charges-migrants-subjected-to-dirty-detention-facilities-bad-food-and-wa) to [freezing ](https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/02/28/freezer/abusive-conditions-women-and-children-us-immigration-holding-cells)temps to no [medical ](https://phr.org/resources/detention-facilities-display-dangerous-trend-of-delayed-and-inadequate-care/#top)care to human rights [abuses. ](https://www.oig.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/assets/2017-12/OIG-18-32-Dec17.pdf)Most recently, [reports ](https://www.commondreams.org/further/2019/04/04/%20https%3A/www.newsweek.com/us-border-patrol-accused-forcing-migrant-families-sleeping-outside-wake-stand-1382858?fbclid=IwAR1Gj9F1ktpKRFiqTkT2iknYjfqmNEfDLq_fn1iaya85ipQhEZ1rDZqpl_I)of migrants crowded into concentration camp tents and under an El Paso bridge have brought ACLU [charges ](https://www.aclutx.org/en/press-releases/aclu-border-rights-center-and-aclu-texas-issue-complaint-demanding-investigation)of cold, dust, verbal abuse and sleep deprivation at the hands of out-of-control border agents. "They treated us like we were animals," [said](https://www.commondreams.org/further/2019/04/04/%20https%3A/www.texasmonthly.com/news/holding-pen-migrant-families-shut-down-el-paso/) one victim. "They call us bodies." The stunning [images](https://twitter.com/NickMiroff/status/1110958165250764800) of those families huddled behind barbed wire disturbed many, not least Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. "When you’re looking at this photo, you’re looking at a mirror," she tweeted in response to images by Nick Miroff. "This is America. This is Texas. This is our course of action, the one we chose. I cannot and will not accept it."
