 ADA - Today is an anniversary that deserves more than a celebration—it deserves a recommitment.

Because the Americans with Disabilities Act wasn’t handed down as kindness. It wasn’t charity. It was a victory demanded by people who refused to accept a world built without them. It was the result of courage, organizing, and pressure—of citizens who looked at exclusion and said: not anymore.

This law represents something fundamental: that access is not a favor. Access is a right.

For generations, people with disabilities were told—by policies, by buildings, by transportation systems, by institutions—that participation in public life was optional. But public life is not optional. Work is not optional. Education is not optional. Voting, healthcare, dignity, independence—those are not luxuries. They are the foundation of equal citizenship.

The ADA changed the rules of what America would tolerate. It challenged barriers that had been normalized and made accountability real. It helped build a country where more people can enter, move, learn, work, and belong—not from the back of the room, not at the mercy of permission, but as full participants in our shared society.

And still, we know that the fight isn’t over.

Accessibility must be ongoing—not just achieved, but maintained. Opportunities must be protected—not just promised. And inclusion must be practiced—not just celebrated.

So today, let us honor the people who fought: those who marched, organized, testified, and took a stand. And let us carry forward the lesson they left us: that progress happens when we demand justice, when we build coalitions, when we turn frustration into action, and when we keep insisting that every person belongs.

Let’s fight for a better world—one where ability isn’t treated as a limitation, where access is normal, and where rights are real.
