#  Which Parts of California Benefited from Legal Gambling?

GAMBLING - California's history with gambling is a complex and evolving one that spans from the early days of the gold rush to the present day.

### Early History of Gambling in California

The gold rush of the mid-19th century introduced a population boom and a gambling boom to California. As prospectors and settlers poured into the state, casinos and gaming halls opened up, especially in cities such as San Francisco.

By the late 1800s, public opinion reversed itself regarding gambling, and casino-style games were prohibited in 1872.

### Legalization and Regulation

After a long period of prohibition, the new age of legalized gambling in California started to materialize in the 1980s.

Firstly, the California State Lottery was legalized in 1984, making this type of gambling legal.

Soon after, The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 made it legal for federally recognized tribes to run casinos on their reservations, exempting them from state gambling laws. This paved the way for the establishment of many tribal casinos in the state.

During the 1990s, card rooms became more regulated, with the California Gambling Control Commission monitoring their activities to ensure that the games were player-banked instead of house-banked. This is an important distinction since it enables card rooms to be run legally by pitting players against one another.

In 2018, after the Supreme Court ruling in Murphy v NCAA, which opened the door to states legalizing sports betting, California started pursuing possibilities for legalization. ### Cities Benefiting from Legal Gambling

Some cities and counties in California have taken advantage of legal gaming to boost their entertainment sector and the economy; good examples of it are:

- Riverside County: The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians opened the first high-stakes bingo business in the early 1980s, which led the way for the other tribal casinos in the region.
- Sonoma County: Graton Resort &amp; Casino, which is owned by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, is one of the largest casinos in the state. It has emerged as a leading economic driver for the area, creating jobs and helping spur community development.
- San Diego: The Viejas Casino &amp; Resort, run by the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, is another well-known gaming spot. It draws visitors from throughout South California and benefits the local economy by creating jobs and producing revenue for the state.

### Largest Casinos in California

If we take the size of the casinos into consideration, one of the biggest and best-known casinos in California is the Pechanga Resort &amp; Casino in Temecula, with a total area of 189,000 square feet.

Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln is another huge attraction, with a 250,000-square-foot casino featuring more than 3,400 slot machines and a large poker room known for hosting numerous poker tournaments.

Yaamava Resort &amp; Casino in Highland is also among the biggest, with a whopping 7,000 slot machines and a 17-story hotel utilizing the attractiveness to tourists.

Finally, The Morongo Casino, Resort &amp; Spa in Cabazon and the Graton Resort &amp; Casino in Sonoma are prominent gaming establishments with extensive entertainment and significant economic contributions to their respective local economies.

Legally sanctioned gambling has shown to be a force in California's entertainment-based economy.

The tribal casinos, card rooms, and state lottery have all helped to create economic stimulus around the state; however, problems still exist, especially as they pertain to sports gambling.

However, as we have seen, Riverside, Sonoma, and San Diego have found a way to utilize the application of legalized gambling to aid in the stimulation of local economies and draw visitors from around the region where such entertainment has not been regulated yet.
