#  TRIO Closes After 17 Years, Ending a Palm Springs Dining Era

PALM SPRINGS — One of Palm Springs’ longtime dining fixtures has closed its doors.

Trio Restaurant, the colorful restaurant at 707 N. Palm Canyon Drive in the city’s Uptown Design District, has closed after 17 years in business. The restaurant opened in 2009 and became a familiar destination for locals, seasonal residents and visitors to the desert. Current business listings now identify the Palm Canyon location as permanently closed, and reports of the sudden shutdown began circulating locally over the weekend.

For years, TRIO combined a lively Palm Springs atmosphere with contemporary California cuisine, cocktails and a popular happy hour. Its location was itself part of the attraction: the restaurant occupied a midcentury building designed in 1953 by noted architects John Porter Clark and Albert Frey. TRIO described itself as a place Palm Springs residents returned to for California cuisine, handcrafted cocktails and welcoming hospitality.

The closure appears to have come abruptly. As recently as late July, OpenTable was still accepting reservations for the restaurant and described TRIO as a neighborhood favorite with a 4.6 rating from more than 4,000 diners. Recent reviews continued to praise its food and service.

TRIO had undergone changes during its long run. Its own history notes that the restaurant opened in 2009, while its more recent operation emphasized a chef-driven menu, cocktails and dishes ranging from its ahi tuna tower and house-made biscuits to salmon, pasta and its TRIO Smashburger.

The closing is likely to be felt particularly by longtime customers and employees. Reaction among Palm Springs residents online has mixed nostalgia with observations that the restaurant had changed in recent years. Several commenters expressed particular concern for longtime staff members suddenly finding themselves out of work during the desert's difficult summer season.

What is not yet clear is why TRIO closed. There is no reliable public statement from the owners explaining the shutdown, so speculation about financial difficulties, declining business or other causes should be avoided until the owners provide more information.

For Palm Springs, however, the significance goes beyond another restaurant vacancy. Restaurants come and go frequently in a tourism-driven city, but 17 years is a substantial run. TRIO survived the Great Recession, the pandemic and the continuing transformation of Palm Canyon Drive while becoming part of the city's modern restaurant landscape.

Its familiar orange-accented identity, bustling dining room and happy hours became part of the Palm Springs experience for thousands of diners.

After 17 years, TRIO on Palm Canyon is gone—and another chapter in Palm Springs dining history has come to an end.
