#  Meet CityWatch Writer: Dennis Zine. A Lifetime of Public Service, Public Safety, and Public Dialogue

Few people have experienced Los Angeles from as many perspectives as Dennis Zine.

Over the course of a remarkable public career spanning more than four decades, Zine has served as a Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officer, League Director of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, Los Angeles City Councilmember, educator, and today, one of CityWatch's most respected political commentators.

His story is not simply one of changing careers—it is one of continuing public service.

Long before entering politics, Zine spent years patrolling the streets of Los Angeles on two wheels, responding to emergencies, investigating collisions, and witnessing firsthand the challenges facing one of America's largest cities. Those experiences shaped a philosophy grounded in accountability, neighborhood safety, and practical government.

As League Director of the Police Protective League, he became a leading voice for rank-and-file officers while navigating some of the most challenging periods in the department's history. It was a role that required balancing the interests of police officers with the expectations of a city demanding reform and transparency.

In 2001, Zine brought that experience to City Hall after being elected to the Los Angeles City Council, representing the San Fernando Valley. During his years on the Council, he focused on public safety, transportation, infrastructure, fiscal responsibility, and quality-of-life issues that directly affected neighborhoods. He developed a reputation for being accessible to constituents, willing to challenge conventional thinking, and unafraid to question City Hall when he believed residents deserved better.

Following his elected service, Zine remained deeply engaged in civic affairs. Today, he shares his insights through CityWatch, where his commentaries examine public policy, public safety, homelessness, elections, government accountability, and the everyday decisions that shape life in Los Angeles.
