#  Sun Safety Essentials to Make the Most of the Los Angeles Summer

HEALTH - Summer is highly anticipated in Los Angeles, especially with the wide range of beach and outdoor activities residents and tourists alike can participate in. However, the enduring effects of climate change are resulting in record-high [summer temperatures](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jun/27/us-summer-extreme-heat-map) across many states, including California. Data shows that on average, summers in the US are hotter by about 0.8C (1.5F), with some states even experiencing extreme heat increases of up to 2.8C (5F).

Besides causing discomfort, extreme heat can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, thus entailing sun safety for optimal health and wellness. While a previous post already discusses [heat protection](https://www.citywatchla.com/climate/24369-extreme-summer-heat-how-do-we-protect-workers) among outdoor workers through workplace heat safety standards, the general public must also be reminded of sun-safe practices to minimize the risks of rising temperatures. Below are essentials LA residents must take note of to make the most of these summer months.

### Sunscreen

Many people are already aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Although many types of sunscreen are available, dermatologists recommend using [mineral sunscreen](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2024/06/20/2901461/0/en/Summerize-Your-Skincare-with-Science-Backed-Hydration-from-ALASTIN-Skincare.html) during extreme heat. Compared to chemical sunscreens that can lose their filtering abilities due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, the physical UV-protective barrier of mineral sunscreen can withstand heat waves. Additionally, you can opt for clothing labeled with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) from brands like Lululemon and REI. They can filter a high percentage of UV rays that can penetrate fabrics, thus providing an additional layer of safety for your skin.

### Heat tracker

Lastly, your smartphone isn’t just useful for communicating with family and friends and taking photos of scenic summer spots in LA, such as Venice Beach. The Los Angeles Times recommends monitoring an [online dashboard](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-04-24/summer-heat-is-coming-heres-a-new-interactive-tool) called HeatRisk, as it serves as a tracker for heat-related indicators like temperature, air quality, and humidity levels. Based on its five-level color scale, the web tool can display a particular risk for a specific day of the week, thus guiding you through planning your activities and minimizing heat exposure and sensitivity.

On top of these sun-smart essentials, take note of the signs and symptoms of heatstroke, including headache, dizziness, nausea, flushed skin, and extreme thirst. By being aware of the risks of heat-related illnesses, you can better protect your health and safety throughout the summer.
