#  Freddy Puza Makes History as Culver City’s First Openly LGBTQ+ Vice Mayor

LGBTQ - Culver City made history last night with the appointment of Freddy Puza as its Vice Mayor, marking the first time an openly LGBTQ+ individual has held this position in the city’s history. This milestone reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, diversity, and representation in leadership.

Freddy Puza, a longtime community advocate and Councilmember since 2022, has built his career on championing equity, sustainability, and progressive policies that benefit all residents of Culver City. His historic appointment as Vice Mayor signifies a step forward for LGBTQ+ representation in local government and serves as an inspiration to communities across the nation.

“I am honored to serve as Vice Mayor of Culver City and grateful for the trust the community has placed in me,” Puza said. “This moment is not just about me—it’s about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels seen, valued, and represented in our city’s leadership.”

Puza was pinned by his 10-year-old godson, Ryan Koehl. It was a special moment for Ryan who aspires to be in local government one day.

During his time on the City Council, Puza has been a vocal advocate for affordable housing, climate action, and policies that promote social and economic justice. As Vice Mayor, he plans to continue prioritizing these issues while fostering collaboration and transparency in city government. Most notably, he plans to organize town halls to hear from different constituent groups, from faith-based leaders, advocacy groups, small business owners, and more.

Puza’s appointment comes at a time when cities nationwide are grappling with issues of representation and equity in governance, especially in light of a political landscape that has used this community as political fodder and as a scapegoat. His leadership promises to bring a fresh perspective and a renewed commitment to making Culver City a place where all residents can thrive.

As the first openly LGBTQ+ Vice Mayor, Puza hopes to inspire the next generation of leaders, especially those from marginalized communities. “Representation matters. I hope this moment shows young people that their voices are important, their dreams are valid, and there is a place for them in public service.” Puza mentored Bryan “Bubba” Fish who won a seat on Culver City in 2024.

Albert Vera and Yasmine-Imani McMorrin were re-elected to City Council and installed last night. Dan O’Brien was voted in as Mayor of Culver City.
