CIVIL RIGHTS--Just hours after President Donald Trump [announced on Twitter](https://www.commondreams.org/news/2017/07/26/trump-tramples-lgbtq-rights-ban-trans-service-members) that transgender people would no longer be permitted to serve in the armed forces, the Department of Justice on Wednesday launched what is being characterized as a separate attack on the LGBTQ community, this time by [arguing in a legal brief](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/justice-gay-civil-rights-act_us_5979422de4b02a4ebb72e45d) that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not protect gay workers from discrimination.
