# Lessons in Transit: Navigating Tokyo's Neighborhoods and Transit-Friendly Accommodations

Tokyo looks enormous because, well, it is. That doesn't mean you'll spend your holiday trapped on trains. The city's rail and subway network connects its neighborhoods remarkably well. For visitors, the bigger question is where to base yourself so getting around doesn't involve three changes before breakfast.
A little map reading before booking can save a lot of unnecessary travel later.
### Choose the Train Line Before the Street
Tokyo's transit-oriented urban model has become a reference point for major cities around the world, giving residents and visitors an efficient way to cross a huge metropolitan area. For an extended stay, accommodation near useful routes such as the JR Yamanote Line can make getting to business districts, cultural sights and restaurant areas much simpler. Multi-platform booking aggregators help visitors compare stays according to exact location and neighborhood features. Looking through top-rated [Tokyo vacation rentals](https://www.cozycozy.com/us/tokyo-short-term-rentals) near major transit hubs can also help travelers compare prices and find a base with practical connections across the capital.
There's a catch. “Five minutes from the station” isn't particularly useful if that station doesn't take you where you're going. Check the lines too.
### Get to Know the Yamanote Line
You don't need to memorize Tokyo's transport map before getting on the plane. Learning the Yamanote Line is a decent start. The loop links several areas visitors are likely to recognize, [including Shibuya](https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/guide-to-shibuya-tokyo), Shinjuku, Ueno, Ikebukuro and Tokyo Station.
Staying near it can make a busy sightseeing itinerary easier. But don't treat the line as your only option. Tokyo has plenty of useful subway and rail connections elsewhere. If another station works better for your plans, use it.
### Shinjuku Comes With a Warning
Shinjuku is incredibly well connected. Its station is also enormous. If you're considering staying nearby, don't stop at checking the walking time. Find out which exit is closest to the accommodation.
Ten minutes from the correct exit and ten minutes from “Shinjuku Station” aren't always the same thing. Once you've figured that out, the neighborhood can be handy for a packed itinerary. There are plenty of places to eat nearby too, which you'll appreciate after spending all day elsewhere.
### Think About 9 PM
Most accommodation searches revolve around what you'll do in the morning. Think about the evening as well. After walking around Tokyo for ten hours, are you really going to want a 40-minute journey for dinner? Having restaurants, [convenience stores](https://www.byfood.com/blog/culture/guide-to-konbini-japanese-convenience-stores) and cafés near your accommodation can make the end of the day considerably easier.
You might even discover your favorite meal within five minutes of where you're staying. Not everything needs a train journey attached to it.
### Famous Isn't Automatically Convenient
First-time visitors often start with Shibuya and Shinjuku because they've heard of them. Fair enough. Both can work brilliantly. But open your itinerary before deciding. If most of what you want to see sits elsewhere, another neighborhood with good connections could make far better sense.
Test a few journeys on a transit map. Check Monday morning, Saturday night and the route back from wherever you expect to spend your evenings. You'll soon see whether the location works.
### Final Thoughts
Tokyo becomes much less intimidating once you start looking at train lines instead of the entire city map. Find a station with useful connections, check the number of transfers you'll regularly make and see what's within walking distance for evenings.
Then stop worrying about finding the single “best” Tokyo neighborhood. The useful one is the neighborhood that works for your trip.
