Now more than ever it is important for every Los Angeles stakeholder to attend the annual Neighborhood Council Budget Day.

The City Council just passed a new budget for more than 12 BILLION dollars, but have made many cuts to departments that may have a direct effect on your city services.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in budget deficit causes these cuts.

How did we get here? Why did we get here? What do the next few annual budgets look like and what can we expect in future service cuts.

The answers to these and many other questions can be answered at Budget Day.

There will be speakers and a panel of experts who can try to explain it to us all.

Scheduled to attend currently:

--'The DONE G.M.

--The President of BONC

--Controller Mejia

--James Finney Conio

--Rick Cole.

Details CityWatch [FRONT PAGE EVENTS](https://www.citywatchla.com/events) May 14 2024 ## 62nd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration Returns to Torrance

The City of Torrance is proud to announce the 62nd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration will take place Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May each year and celebrates all six branches of the United States Military under the U.S. Department of Defense.

This year the United States Space Force receives the honorary military branch distinction with Lieutenant General Philip A. Garrant serving as the Grand Marshal of the Armed Forces Day Parade. Lt. Gen. Garrant is Commander of U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, headquartered at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California. Space Systems Command is responsible for supplying our Nation, allies, and warfighters with critical timely and resilient space-based capabilities. This is critical because they close the key gaps that create vulnerability, timely because our pacing challenges are working faster to take over our Nation’s place in space, and resilient because emergency threats demand it. Our military, our Nation and our allies rely on the Space Force to deliver the space-based capabilities that protect our Nation, enable our critical infrastructures, and fuel our economy. Also joining Lt. Gen. Garrant to lead the parade are Honorary Grand Marshal, Michael Hopkins, retired U.S. Space Force Col. and former NASA Astronaut, and Senior Ranking Flag Officer, Col. Mia L. Walsh, Commander, Space Base Delta 3 (SBD 3), Los Angeles Air Force Base.

Torrance Mayor George K. Chen said, “This cherished tradition not only honors the bravery and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, but also unites us in gratitude and patriotism. Let us pay tribute to our heroes that protect us worldwide courageously and celebrate the spirit of resilience that defines our great City!”

Torrance is one of the few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor our Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration. The three day celebration includes a military exhibit, military concert, special flyover surprises, 5K For Freedom, and the highly anticipated parade along Torrance Boulevard. The main purpose of the hearing is to collect feedback from the public, and we urge you to call in and speak about the impacts of this massive project on our community. **Just as importantly, we urge you to communicate with our City Councilmember, Katy Yaroslavsky**, to [let her know](mailto:councilmember.yaroslavsky@lacity.org,vrescalvo?subject=TELEVISION%20CITY%20REDEVELOPMENT&body=Dear%20Councilmember%20Yaroslavsky%2C%0A%0AI%20am%20very%20concerned%20about%20the%20impacts%20the%20proposed%20Television%20City%20expansion%20project%20will%20have%20on%20our%20community.%20It%20is%20way%20too%20big%20for%20this%20neighborhood%20and%20will%20generate%20unbearable%20traffic.%0A%0AThe%20developer%2C%20Hackman%20Capital%2C%20has%20presented%20a%201.7%20million%20square%20foot%20studio%20project%20which%20is%20just%2025%25%20studio%20and%2075%25%20office%20compound.%20They%E2%80%99ve%20been%20calling%20it%20a%20world%20class%20studio%2C%20but%20in%20reality%2C%20the%20new%20development%20would%20be%20a%20massive%20office%20complex%20with%20a%20minor%20studio%20attached.%20And%20they%20want%20to%20shove%20it%20right%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20established%20residential%20neighborhoods.%0A%0AWhile%20some%20of%20the%20TVC%20office%20space%20is%20designated%20for%20studio%20use%2C%20550%2C000%20square%20feet%20is%20general%20office%20space%20that%20has%20no%20relation%20to%20production.%20The%20developer%20wants%20to%20hedge%20their%20bet%2C%20but%20the%20community%20does%20not%20need%20a%20huge%20office%20complex%20and%20should%20not%20bear%20the%20burden%20of%20the%20added%20disruption%20and%20congestion%20it%20will%20cause.%0A%0AThe%20developer%20made%20some%20positive%20changes%20in%20their%20April%202024%20revision%2C%20but%20still%20kept%2092.5%25%20of%20their%20square%20footage.%20This%20slight%20reduction%20does%20little%20to%20minimize%20the%20alarming%20impact%20on%20traffic%2C%20infrastructure%2C%20emergency%20response%2C%20and%20our%20cherished%20historic%20neighborhoods.%0A%0AI%20urge%20you%20to%20hold%20Hackman%20accountable%20to%20their%20promise%20of%20a%20studio%20project%20and%20eliminate%20the%20550%2C000%20square%20feet%20of%20%E2%80%9Cgeneral%E2%80%9D%20office%20space.%0A%0AFor%20better%20or%20worse%2C%20TVC%202050%20will%20set%20a%20precedent%20for%20future%20development%20in%20one%20of%20the%20city%E2%80%99s%20treasured%20neighborhoods.%20We%20are%20counting%20on%20you%20to%20stand%20with%20the%20community.%0A%0ASincerely%2C%0A%5BYour%20Name%5D) that our neighborhood is concerned about the harm this mega-development will do to our community. **HERE ARE THE FACTS:** TV City will be TWICE THE SIZE OF THE STAPLES CENTER. It doesn’t need to be. This is an office complex masquerading as a production studio. The developer, Hackman Capital, has proposed a 1.7 million square foot studio project which is just 25% studio and 75% office compound. It has been advertised as a world-class studio. In reality, the new development would be a massive office complex with a small studio attached. While some of the TVC office space is designated for studio use, 550,000 square feet is general office space that has no relation to production. Our community does not need a huge office complex and should not bear the burden of the added disruption and congestion it will cause, including a jitney making dozens of trips daily on Orange Grove to and from the new Metro Purple Line Subway stop near Wilshire and Fairfax. **CEO of Boyle Heights Community Partners** Vivian Escalante will share her grandmother's short story as a women defense worker during World War II. She worked at Lockheed Martin building military war planes. Despite the long hours and difficult working conditions, she was proud to be doing her part to support the war effort.

She talked about the camaraderie among the women in the factory and how they supported each other through the challenges they faced. She also spoke about the sense of purpose she felt knowing that her work was helping to protect the country and the freedoms it stood for.

***Taste of the Nation*, the Premier Culinary Event for a Cause, Returns on May 4****th****!**

*Co-chaired by award-winning chefs Brooke Williamson and Mei Lin, the outdoor, ultimate foodie experience supports the No Kid Hungry cause to end childhood hunger.*

**Los Angeles -** Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry, the country’s premier culinary event for a cause, will return to Los Angeles on Saturday, May 4th, at Media Park in Culver City. Taste of The Nation is a culinary event created by No Kid Hungry to provide exclusive access to Los Angeles’s top culinary talent while making a direct impact on No Kid Hungry’s mission to end childhood hunger. The event brings together 40 of the best chefs, restauranteurs, tastemakers, and mixologists from around Los Angeles for one afternoon to serve guests scrumptious bite-sized fare, craft cocktails, and delectable desserts to support ending childhood hunger.

This year’s ultimate foodie experience was crafted in part by event co-chairs and award-winning chefs Brooke Williamson, Executive Chef and Owner of *Playa Provisions*, and Mei Lin, Executive Chef and Owner of *Daybird*. They have worked together with the Taste of the Nation team to bring every cuisine and style of cooking to this event, from bold Asian street eats to upscale farm-to-table dishes. Between courses, guests will cleanse their palates with curated, savory sips by celebrated local mixologists, winemakers, and brewers, such as Liam Odien from *Playa Provisions* and Chef Bricia Lopez’s famous Micheladas from *Guelagetza*.

When asked why No Kid Hungry’s efforts to end childhood hunger are so vital, Los Angeles event co-chair and featured chef Mei Lin shared:

*“Childhood hunger is a problem that affects all of us. No Kid Hungry is working to solve this problem and has made a positive impact on the lives of millions of kids. I’m proud to be a part of LA’s Taste of the Nation event to help No Kid Hungry end childhood hunger.”*

*![](https://www.citywatchla.com/images/Screenshot%202024-04-26%20at%208.24.46%20AM.jpg)*

In addition to the delicious food and drinks, there is entertainment that suits all ages. There is live music, interactive games, raffles, and the fan favorite- a children’s activity corner. Perhaps the best entertainment of all are the live cooking demonstrations featuring top talent from around town. This event is a great way to get the whole family outside to enjoy some good food, all while supporting a great cause.

No Kid Hungry’s Senior Director of Culinary Partnerships & Events, Courtney Smith, stated that the Taste of the Nation event is so important because:

*“One in five kids in the US is living with hunger. No Kid Hungry works tirelessly every day to make sure every child gets three meals a day by advocating for programs and helping communities get the resources they need to feed children. Your ticket to Taste of the Nation raises funds for this work. We welcome guests from across L.A. to come hungry and ready for an afternoon full of flavorful food, tasty libations, and family fun. Details CityWatch [FRONT PAGE EVENTS](https://www.citywatchla.com/events) April 25 2024 ### Join Abe Gurko & Tamie Wilson To Help Defeat Jim Jordan

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that Jim Jordan is conceivably the evilest member of Congress. James Comer, his partner in crime, is just an ineffectual hack. So are Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, and the other wanna-be Freedom Lunatics. But few are as sinister and dangerous as No-Jacket-Jordan. Please join me in my mission to “End Jim Jordan”.

Meet **[Tamie Wilson](https://substack.com/redirect/8be43bc9-381d-43c6-81a9-c269a1e14c8a?j=eyJ1IjoiMjZsb2ViIn0.m3bMIzV2SVML_E4AiCt8HSkVa4kNPxJLZ2v8DgyF5tY)** who is running to unseat Jordan in the 4th District of Ohio, the state where she was born and raised. Tamie is a single mother to her 18-year-old son, a small business owner, and a community advocate.

Why, you may ask, am I focused on a congressional fight so far away from home? When I interviewed one of the victims of the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal involving the heinous Dr. Strauss, I felt an obligation to do something to besmirch Gymbo Jordan. During that time, Jim Jordan worked at OSU and knew what was happening to the athletes. They confided in Jordan and his response was to turn a blind eye to the 150-plus students that were violated. To make matters worse, Gym Jordan called a student at his home and begged him not to go to the authorities! Since then, the NOT-SO-GOOD doctor has taken his life out of guilt and fear of spending a lifetime in prison. The court case with all the boys who were molested is still lingering in the courts. I feel as though we have a moral obligation to do something. Hence promoting Tamie Wilson to a wider audience is something I am happy to do. If you are in LA, join us for an informal event in

"I’m running for Congress because Jim Jordan and Washington aren't working for us. I just finished my first Bill, The Comprehensive Sexual Abuse Prevention and Accountability Act. My Bill will help protect and prevent students and athletes from being sexually abused. This Bill is the first of 9 Bills that I am writing. It’s time to elect a doer who will work hard to get things done for all our families. I have common sense solutions to help us all live better.” Please go to Tamie’s website to see her positions and what she will fight for.
