50,000 LA Volunteers Make Big Sunday BIG! More than 50,000 Angelenos joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and founder David Levinson to perform community service throughout Los Angeles to make this weekend the biggest BIG Sunday in the event’s eight year history.
The LA Times reported: “the gigantic volunteer effort reached most corners of the city, with helpers performing make-overs on homeless women downtown, bowling with developmentally disabled adults in Santa Monica, bathing rescued beagles in El Monte and serving brunch to AIDS patients in Silver Lake.
Volunteers coordinated more than 300 projects planting, painting, cooking an d cleaning for those in need and for the first time Big Sunday stretched into two days of good deeds.”
Mayor Signs Tenant Relocation OrdinanceMayor Villaraigosa signed into law the increased tenant relocation assistance ordinance, which includes other tenant protections and instructs staff to develop an ordinance to restrict demolition and strengthen existing laws to restrict condo conversions.
The increased amounts are retroactive to eviction notices served from April 11, 2007. (For more details, visit: www.CESinAction.org) _
