Let’s Honor Our NC Heroes Print E-mail
A Modest Proposal

Los Angeles newspapers, including CityWatch, told us of the heroic efforts of members of the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council, who like so many other heroes before them, reacted to the train wreck tragedy without any thought of receiving recognition for their efforts.
Their actions made me proud to have been involved in any way with neighborhood councils.  At same time, I felt inadequate knowing that my reaction was to sit paralyzed in horror in front of the TV when I too should have been helping.

And I later I felt disappointed that the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, with its responsibility to promote neighborhood councils and disseminate information about them, has yet to do anything.

On October 11, City Hall will be the site for the Congress of Neighborhoods.  If form follows practice, attendees will be asked listen politely while elected officials stand in line for the opportunity to tell everyone how wonderful they are.

Wouldn’t it be great if they would give up their time so that the neighborhood councils could spend a small amount of time honoring their own heroes?
