First Person
By George Garrigues
I was certainly impressed a few weeks ago when I e-mailed the Bureau of Street Services with a complaint.
I had noticed that some damned idiots had posted big advertising signs
really high on the power poles on Overland near National Place touting
some kind of get-rich-quick scheme.
I poked around the Internet and came across a page where I could file a complaint and ask that the signs be taken down.
It's at www.lacity.org/BOSS/request.htm .
I filed the complaint on a Friday, and they e-mailed me a Service Request Number and a phone number I could call for more info. Early the next week the city had sent a truck and crew to pull down the offending placards.
A few days later I got a personal phone call from the bureau asking if the problem had been solved. Yes, and very nicely, too.
I found there is a national organization working against this "street spam," as it's called. Go to www.causs.org/index.html for more info.
