Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative (LANI) will host its Sixth Annual Community Forum at USC Davidson Conference Center on May 15th, 2008.
Drawing on LANI’s unparalleled track record of revitalizing diverse urban areas, this exciting event gathers and trains neighborhood leaders and community stakeholders, providing a critical opportunity for dialogue and information sharing.
Councilwoman Jan Perry will deliver the welcome address at this free event which is open to all groups and individuals interested in community development and neighborhood revitalization.
LANI is honored to feature prominent actor, comedian, director and co-managing partner of the Wayans Pacifica Capital Urban Development Partnership, Keenen Ivory Wayans as this years keynote speaker. Mr. Wayans is recognized as a pioneer of the eco-conscious and green movement. From nutrition awareness and lifestyle to sustainable real estate development, Mr. Wayans lives the eco-experience in every facet of his life.
The Forum will offer workshops on a variety of hot topics and important issues affecting our communities today. For example, experts will discuss the myriad issues and myths associated with bringing grocery stores to urban areas. Representatives from Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets, the Los Angeles CRA and Local Initiatives Support Corporation will discuss strategies to attract healthy and affordable food services into your community.
Another pressing issue affecting Los Angeles communities is the presence of gang activity and violence. Public safety experts will talk about measures that can be taken to mitigate the impacts of gangs in our neighborhoods, including graffiti removal, improved lighting, and community policing.
Representatives from the Community Coalition and the Office of Zoning Administration will discuss the issue of nuisance businesses in our community and what can be done by residents and local organizations to clean up or close down such establishments and replace them with much needed services that add value and bring quality jobs to the community.
Other workshop topics will include: neighborhood mapping (sponsored by UCLA); the historic Broadway revitalization project; California friendly landscape and irrigation; bicycling in Los Angeles, and how to pass a Neighborhood Council funding audit.
This year’s forum promises to be an exciting and informative experience. All individuals and groups involved in the revitalization of this great city are strongly encouraged to attend this free event. Pre-registration is encouraged, but onsite registration will be available. Register online today at www.lani.org.
